LINDSEY VONN ALREADY REALLY ANNOYING
February 21 2010
Vancouver, Canada – Over forty years ago Andy Warhol made his oft misquoted statement that ‘In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes’ a statement that while adding a great deal of celebrity to the man himself, has not really
come to pass. In some ways Warhol’s statement did have a ring of truth in our current state of instant celebrity and people becoming famous for no apparent reason whatsoever. Thus far however, not everyone has gained, or even sought, that elusive fifteen minutes of fame. A select few however have had more than their share.
People such as Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, and Tila Tequila are just a few examples of people who have, despite sense and logic, become globally famous. They are in many ways the embodiment of the spirit of Warhol’s vision, if not the literal translation. While much of that celebrity has been isolated in the Hollywood-related realm, a few people from less traditional areas have also gained great popularity with relatively little accomplishment. In particular, the rise in popularity of Olympic athletes in recent years to the status of genuine celebrities has added to the overall culture and may help to bring about a literal version of Warhol’s vision. The newest of those of is American downhill skier Lyndsey Vonn who recently won gold in her event and has already become annoying.
“I train all dry-land in the summer, so this year I spent almost six weeks in Austria with my private Red Bull trainers doing my own program. We did six to eight hours a day of training. About half of that was strength—a lot of stability and core, using exercise balls to work on balance and agility training outside with quick moves like stepping through cones and ladders and hurdles,” Vonn told Women’s Health magazine. “"I just try to avoid sweets in general during the season, and eat a really healthy carb-based breakfast to help fuel my workouts for the day. I snack on fruits and nuts…in the middle of workouts, I'll have a protein shake.”
Vonn also spoke of her desire to host Saturday Night Live, and also played up her injured shin which, in very dramatic fashion, she indicated might keep her out of competition entirely.
“You look at people such as Michael Phelps or Shaun White and how they have
become bona fide celebrities and you just kind of shudder when someone similar comes along. That was exactly what happened with Vonn when she made those comments about possibly not being able to ski. Whatever the extent of her injury, her statements were going to bring her the spotlight,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “It’s a tried and method towards celebrity. Huge potential faced with enormous odds overcomes those challenges to triumph. It’s a story as old as stories themselves and Vonn and her people played it perfectly. That’s all fine and good and would have been a non-issue if she weren’t so annoying.”
Fellow Olympic celebrity Shaun White, who also won gold in Vancouver, has been just as irritating to many.
“She’s moderately good looking, though she just have a very large face, but ultimately she is a skier. I mean a skier. That’s only marginally a sport. You go one way really fast and if something gets in your way, you turn. She’s talking about what’s on her iPod and things she’s thinking, I mean who cares really,” continued Marvins. “At least with Paris Hilton or Tila Tequila you get sex tapes and a lot of laughs. These people don’t really offer much to the public and are just taking without giving back, and we have to keep listening to them over and over again.”
At 25 it is believed that Vonn will compete in the 2016 Olympics, leaving her in the public realm for many years to come.
