SERENA WILLIAMS EQUALS BILLIE JEAN KING, TURNS EYE TOWARDS WOMEN
February 3 2010
Melbourne, Australia – The Williams sisters have without a doubt been two of the most dominant players in a sport that has had more than its share of great players. Since the emergence of the duo into the mainstream of tennis in the late 1990’s, the

sisters have combined to run roughshod over the sport and play waste to dozens of great players and records. Of the two, it is the younger Serena that has emerged as the more dominant with one of the best winning percentages in history and evoking the kind of fear in opponents that no other player has ever done.
Now Serena has put another feather in her cap, equalling the legendary Billie Jean King by winning her 12th Grand Slam title. The final win, a victory over Belgian Justine Henin in the Australian Open, has now assured Williams’ status as one of, if not the greatest tennis player ever to pick up a racket. Williams though, like many great champions, has a great deal of respect for the game and its history. In tying the record, Williams acknowledged King’s achievement and lauded her success, seeing it more as an honour to tie the great rather than a victory unto itself. Now Williams has made clear her intentions to follow King in her personal life as well and start to date only women.
“Well, I just definitely stayed positive, and I had so many chances in the second. I had so many chances and I didn't capitalise on them. So in the third, I knew I would have chances again just to capitalise on that one chance in that one moment,” said Williams after the win. “It was definitely a tough match mentally and physically. I felt like we both were out there trying to kind of prove something. I think we both did at the end of the day. I feel really special that I was able to tie Billie Jean King. Because in my heart of hearts, I've been going for it and I haven't been able to quite achieve it ... It was good to tie her, but what I'm more enthused about is what she did off the court.”
King has been credited with helping to further the sport of tennis with women as well as working with various charitable organizations, but it is believed Williams has not referring to any of that work.
“The assumption, the unfair assumption, is that all female tennis players are gay. That is largely due players like King who were the principal representatives of the sport. King and fellow star Martina Navratilova were the principal ambassadors for the sport and fit virtually every cliché about lesbians that existed at the time, leading to the now omnipresent perception,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “That’s of course not the case and the percentage of gay women in the sport is likely the same as it is in the general population, but the perception remains despite living in a much more enlightened time.”
The WTA has never had any restrictions in regards to sexual orientation.
“It’s a very interesting move for Serena though one that ultimately will likely never hold up. People generally don’t just turn gay and so that is going to be a major obstacle for Serena in her effort to emulate King, at least off the court,” continued Marvins. “Frankly, there’s also a chance that many people including King herself might find the whole idea offensive, though sexy. Serena is kind of hot for a muscular chick so there’s a good chance that she’ll get a lot of action.”
Serena reportedly already has a large collection of sensible shoes and rarely wears a bra around the house.
