WIFE ELIN DECLINED CHANCE TO REPLACE TIGER WOODS IN GOLF TOURNEY
December 2 2009
Thousand Oaks, CA – With pretty much every ounce of the media’s attention firmly focused on Tiger Woods and his domestic issues, little has been made of the golf tournament this incident has hindered. Woods predictably announced that he would
not be attending the tournament, a tournament of which Tiger himself is the host, as a result of the injuries he sustained in his car accident as well as the incredible and unprecedented level of media attention being paid to the golfer.
Woods isn’t the only high profile golfer to pull out of the tourney either. Vijay Singh also withdrew as a result of injury, leaving the charity severely lacking in star talent, leaving organizers forced to settle with second place. While both players have been replaced in the tournament reportedly organizers had tried and failed to keep start talent in the game. Specifically organizers were looking to break with tradition and had tried to get Elin Nordegren, wife of Woods to appear in place of the injured golfer. While such an addition would undoubtedly brought a huge amount of attention to the tournament, organizers were reportedly principally interested in Nordegren after hearing about her swing which helped free Tiger from his demolished vehicle.
“The organizers really wanted Elin and they thought for a moment that she would say yes. Unfortunately the incredible level of media attention that has followed the two of them over the last week and half kind of put a damper over things. From what I’ve heard it was actually Tiger’s suggestion but the two of them had second thoughts as the media attention became non-stop,” said a tournament insider. “Tiger was really talking her up after that rescue. She has puttered around on the golf course before but everything just seemed to explode that day. The kind of power that she showed with that swing was something that surprised both of them and got them excited about the possibilities. Obviously Tiger wasn’t going to show up with those injuries and she would have been a good replacement but alas it’s not meant to be.”
Because the Chevron World Challenge is an off-season, non-sanctioned event female golfers are permitted to play without any kind of special approval. Nordegren is not officially a player for the LPGA but it’s not believed that would have hindered her ability to play.
“I’m sure all those years watching from the sidelines have taught her a thing or two about how to play the game. Whether she would have been able to actually compete with that class of players or not is a serious question but because it is charity it would have been a good opportunity to test the waters,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “At 29, Nordegren would still have many good years ahead of her if she chose to pursue the sport at a more significant level. It’s obvious she has at least more than a passing interest in the sport and if her swing is that strong she could prove deadly on the tour.”
Nordegren would join Annika Sorenstam as one of the few Swedish-born players in the game. Sorenstam retired from competition at the end of the 2008 season.
“The one real obstacle will be the perception that she only got on the tour as a result of being Tiger Woods’ wife, not for her talent. Many golfers play from a very young age and earn their way on to their respective tours and perception that she had an unfair advantage could bring a lot of drama to the tour,” continued Marvins. “The two of them would be a power couple, should they stay together, and probably become the most dominant husband and wife team in the sport. Hopefully she won’t let this missed opportunity limit her.”
Guys no one has heard of will replace Woods and Singh on the tour instead..
