DEBATE OVER BATHROOM BREAKS STALLS NBA LABOUR NEGOTIATIONS
August 9 2011
New York, NY – When the NFL labour issues ended most basketball believed that it was a good sign that their woes had little traction. However, now more than a month into the NBA lockout very little progress has been made and apparently little or no passion to affect a resolution on either side of the issue.
The NBA is, of course, not the NFL. There is far less room to wiggle in professional basketball than there is in its gridiron counterpart. The NFL simply generates more money and that changes everything. Still, the NBA is no slouch and it is most certainly in the best interests of everyone involved to find some kind of middle ground, more or less.
Like the NFL strike, it is the fans which probably have the most to lose if the labour issues continue. Luckily for the league there aren’t all that many of them to worry about, leaving them with far less pressure than other leagues, making them free to negotiate with no real stress.
“It’s not going great but no one really expected it would. The owners want a solution and so do the players. The league to a lesser degree. No one is really making an effort

though. They are talking about making an effort but saying it doing it are two different things,” said an NBA insider. “They sit at that negotiating table every day, well every week day, and try to work something out. However the lunches have been getting longer and longer and there are more coffee breaks than ever.”
Many players have already signed onto European teams just in case the season is cancelled.
“Luckily everyone has a vested interest in making things happen. They all have a need to get a deal done eventually but that could be next week, next year, or who know when. That’s the real issue, they don’t feel like it matters when the season starts,” continued the insider. “Luckily they don’t have the same kind of pressure that the NFL had. If that season was delayed it would have been chaos, riots in the streets and the like. This delay will get a few homies irritated but the sky won’t fall if the NBA doesn’t start up on time.”
Various polls of NBA fans did not garner enough data to generate a report.
“They know that they don’t really have the loyalty of the NFL and that if they don’t keep the league running it is possible that fans just won’t return but knowing and doing are two different things. They’d really like to get the season started on time but they don’t want to tax themselves too much,” continued the insider. “So much of this negotiation requires long hours and talking, lots of talking. That means they have to

drink a lot of fluids and that in turn means they go to the washroom a lot which is really annoying. They’ll get it together, probably, eventually.”
Much of the negotiations have revolved around moving to a room with closer washroom facilities.
“It is possible that if the season is delayed or cancelled that it could mean the end of the NBA as an institution. It seems hard to imagine such a thing happening but it could,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “There would certainly be a few people angry if that happened but luckily it would be that bad. I mean those handfuls of people will be really angry but luckily they are small in number. Hopefully they get the bathroom situation worked out.”
One bright sign: both sides agreed to leave early on Wednesdays, the first real breakthrough.
