ERIN ANDREWS SUSPECTED OF SENDING THREATENING EMAILS TO HERSELF
April 5 2010
Bristol, CT – Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, Dan Rather, Ted Koppel. For decades those names have graced television sets across the United States as a trusted friends, newsmen amongst newsmen who have brought the horrors and
beauty of the world to the homes of millions of Americans. In doing so those men have also come to define the nature of news itself, holding up and ethic that in recent years has seen erosion by partisan reporting and opinion-based blogging. Their status however remains untouched even as the world they created falls apart.
While those names have stood as the hallmark of newsdom, others have toiled in the underbelly of the machine, producing cute stories about grandmothers winning the lottery and cats stuck in trees. Like any business, a hierarchy exists in news and while few can ever hope to achieve the heights of luminaries such as Cronkite, there are those who don’t even try. Far down in the pecking order exists another kind of reporter, people whose jobs come and go with the passing of the tide, and for the most part they report the weather and sports. Of course not everyone wants to be resigned to that ignominious fate,
particularly ESPN babe Erin Andrews who in recent months has become one of the most famous reporters in the world. Now a new scandal involving the reporter has brought her into the spotlight again, but investigators believe it may not be all it’s cracked up to be.
“I’ve read a few of these emails and they are very disturbing, particularly near the end and they would be very concerning if they turn out to be honest but everyone is having serious doubts about that. We know who sent them but the issue is whether or not she put him up to him,” said an FBI insider. “The reality is she has the most to benefit from this attention and motive is always a major concern when conducting any investigation. People fake their deaths, kill their own children, so something like this wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.”
At issue are a series of emails sent to ESPN which begin in a very sexual manner and turn violent. Andrews is currently appearing on ‘Dancing with the Stars’.
“While you certainly have to look at the possibility that these emails are a result of her being in the public eye, you also have to look at the very real idea that this could simply be them striking while the iron is hot, so to speak. Agents and publicists know all too well that exploiting opportunity is the key to popularity,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “She was known locally and to sports fans before the incident with the spy camera, but now she has been on Oprah and is on a hit TV show and so you have to wonder about the integrity behind these claims. The spying incident was likely real, but they very well could have seized that opportunity to up her value.”
The first emails began just as the criminal trial for her previous stalker, Michael Barrett, was wrapping up.
“Sending threatening emails to yourself, or doing it through an intermediary, is crime unto itself and if this turns out to be the case Erin Andrews could be undoing all the good will she has built up. Aside from potentially facing criminal charges, I’m sure the public would be a whole lot less interested in her if it turns out that it was she doing the stalking,” continued Weston. “Such revelation would certainly undo her rise to celebrity and make her notorious. Fame is fame I suppose, but you make a lot more money when you at least appear to not have a split personality.”
Andrews is repped by IMG.
