FANS BARELY EVEN NOTICE AS THE NBA CANCELS EVEN MORE GAMES
October 31 2011
New York, NY – Its official, the NBA has cancelled even more games. The league announced that games through November 30th will be cancelled as the league, players, and owners continue to try to negotiate a settlement amenable to all, something that just doesn’t seem to be forthcoming anytime soon.
Now, with no apparent progress on the table, it is entirely possible that the entire season will be scrapped, leaving players and the few remaining fans caught in the middle. Already though many fans have found new ways to occupy themselves instead of watching their favourite sport including playing board games, knitting, and other crafts, many of which are far more satisfying than what they would normally be doing.
“We held out that joint hope together, but in light of the breakdown of talks, there will not be a full NBA season under any circumstances. It's not practical, possible or prudent to have a full season now,” said Commissioner David Stern.
He also warned that the negotiations may become even more challenging in the coming days and weeks as owners try to make up for lost revenues tied to the suspended season.
The principle sticking point appears to be the percentage of the revenue split and other smaller issues which really isn’t of interest to many fans.
“It’s bad for the fans, they are really the ones who are hurt the most. Well the stadium people and the television people too, but it’s the fans who make the whole thing move. I wouldn’t be surprised, frankly, if this goes in a similar way to the baseball strike in the 90’s where fans just didn’t return. Assuming the league still had fans, that will be a major issue for them here,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “People certainly show up for games and there are certainly real fans in a few cities, places like New York and Indiana, but a lot of people just get comped tickets or they go out for business and the like, but those aren’t the people who are going to keep the whole thing moving.”
Many stadiums have already started to book new events in lieu of having basketball games. A recent replacement concert by Journey at Madison Square Garden’s drew twice the crowd of regular season Knicks game. The Knicks have really only had regular season games for the last few years.
“All sides in a really tough spot but at least the people who normally go to the games aren’t going to be too put out. They will always have something to do, whether it be stamp collecting or just hanging out in the yard piling mud. At least they will have something,” continued Marvins. “Hopefully, for the league, the strike doesn’t go on forever. It would be very detrimental to the business if they could never affect resolution and league just was on strike forever. That would really hurt the chances of bringing the fans back in the long term and that isn’t something anyone wants, presumably.”
Many players have signed contracts with European and Asian leagues, which no one in the United States really watches.
