FUTURE PRESS CONFERENCES IN DOUBT FOR RAFAEL NADAL AFTER PAINFUL COLLAPSE
September 5 2011
New York City, NY – Only hours after earning a spot in the U.S. open final, Rafael Nadal collapsed in in pain at a stressful press conference. Nadal, the number two ranked player in the world, slid under the table during the conference, taken down by an apparent leg cramp.
“It's just bad luck that it happened in public. It was really hot, I ran a lot and you sweat a lot in these conditions,” said Nadal before continuing with the conference, in apparent pain. Nadal will face Andy Murray in the Open semi-final but his press conference future may now be in question.
“People don’t really notice, but tennis players run a lot of miles in any game. They stop and start and play in all types of conditions and that can make them prone to things like cramping, particularly if their eating or hydration is a little off,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “Nadal is human and we all saw that during the press conference. Presumably, he will be better prepared the next time, but these types of things can have a cascading effect. It will be interesting to see if he shows up for the next conference.”
Fellow players, including opponent Andy Murray, expressed sympathy for Nadal and his situation.
“I'm sure a lot of people were surprised because it was him that was cramping, but Rafa's human. I think some people forget that sometimes,” said Murray, no doubt sensing a press conference advantage come post-match. “I don’t think it’s odd that someone’s cramping.”
Murray suffered no cramps during his conference, which was much shorter than Nadal’s.
“They have good people, good therapists and doctors, behind the scenes so I think he will probably be alright for the match and going forward. However, there is only so much that doctors are able to do. They don’t work magic. They may have to pull him off press conferences for a little while, just to see how he heals,” continued Marvins. “He may try to push through the pain, that’s what athletes do, but he really should take it slow. He won’t see a career collapse if he misses a press conference or two. If it continues people may start to ask questions, but it should be fine for now.”
Murray has said he will not miss a press conference under any circumstances. Thus far, Nadal has not missed as single session.
“These types of press conference injuries are certainly rare, but that doesn’t mean that they are any more problematic than any other. The cause may be unique but generally the results are the same and don’t require any special type of treatment,” continued Marvins. “Nadal is really one of the best players to ever step on the court and it would be a shame to see his press conference career ended this way. I doubt that will be the case, but you never know. Hopefully he won’t push himself too far too soon.”
Nadal is already preparing for his next conference.
