JOE PATERNO NOT FIRED AND MAY RETURN TO OVERSEEING SEX ABUSE IN A DIFFERENT CAPACITY
January 14 2012
University Park, PA – There will likely never be a bigger college sports scandal than the one that has embroiled Penn State over the last few months. Aside from the acts that occurred, which were almost sanctioned, the fact that it happened within the Triple-A football program in the nation makes it much, much bigger. Surely the events would have been awful at a smaller school, but at Penn State they exploded.
Aside from all the awfulness that went on, all the depravity and lies and subterfuge, the damage to young children who may never recover, the biggest damage has been done to one of the men central to the events, Joe Paterno. A legend amongst legends, Joe Paterno was loved across the country by fans and foes alike, but now his twilight years will be marred by scandal.
Or not, perhaps. When Paterno was ousted from the football program shortly after the scandal broke everyone had assumed that he had been fired, quite rightly thrown out with the trash for his actions. Now, though, it appears that he was not actually terminated and remains on staff at the University, leaving open the possibility that he could return to the team in some capacity, overseeing the programs and making sure that everyone talks about what happens in the showers.
“Coach Paterno remains employed by the University as a tenured faculty member. The details of his retirement are being worked out and will be made public when they are finalized. Generally speaking, the University intends to honor the terms of his employment contract and is treating him financially as if he had retired at the end of the 2011 football season,” said the school in statement.
Its likely Paterno will be allowed to retire sometime shortly, but may still stay on in a purely advisory capacity.
Paterno has reportedly remained in contact with the school since his departure in the Fall, offering suggestions on best football practice and advice on how to unclog problematic drains, something he may continue after his official departure.
“It’s a hard thing for the school. There are still a lot of people who love Paterno, who will love him no matter what he did, or what he didn’t do in his case, and it behooves the school to not just oust him unilaterally, for that segment of the fan base,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “It may be distasteful to the majority of people because of his actions, and quite rightly so, but Penn State has shown that the culture there is a little different than the rest of the world, they do things other people don’t seem to like.”
Those things that people don’t like apparently no longer includes raping children.
“It’s a strange situation for them because they have to continue to appease the football
fans while at the same time satisfy the people opposed to raping young boys in showers, which really does make up the majority of people, at least outside Pennsylvania,” continued Marvins. “I doubt that whatever happens Paterno will be allowed to oversee staff independently or be put in charge of the shower facilities again. Even if he could handle it that would cause public relations issues. I’m sure he can still contribute though, especially to the on-field product and despite his actions, covering up all that child rape, it is football. People will forgive a lot for a good game, especially at Penn State.”
Paterno has apparently not showered in months, now having too many bad memories associated with the process.
