JOE PATERNO WISHES THOSE KIDS HADN’T BEEN SO TEMPTING
November 9 2011
University Park, PA - It’s the end of an era, a remarkable era, not only for Penn State but also for all of college sports. After 46-years in charge of the school football program, elevating it to national status and bringing in billions over the years, Joe Paterno will step down as head coach amidst a growing sex abuse scandal by a former coach.
While few will debate the rationale for Paterno’s resignation – he hid eyewitness evidence of an assault to protect his coach – the end is still a tragic one for the man who did so much for the school. That ignominious end will no doubt tarnish his reputation and legacy, one that seemed so invulnerable.
Paterno though has been contrite, accepting responsibility for his actions but also lamenting the temptation offered by the children, at least in private.
“This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more. I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief,” said Paterno in a statement.
Paterno’s exit comes after revelations that his former coach, Jerry Sandusky, had assaulted a number of young boys on school grounds, something which Paterno knew about and worked to cover up.
Privately Paterno has said much of the same, according to insiders, but has also laid the blame at the feet of the victims which he had tried to silence for so long. Sandusky had been banned from having young boys on campus after the 2002 incident.
“Joe really does feel bad about the whole thing and he knows her certainly could have done more, but anything like that would have interfered with football. Jerry (Sandusky) was a good coach and somebody Joe relied heavily on. He didn’t like that he liked little boys but football was still the priority, always was, always will be,” said a Penn State insider. “Yes, these boys were hurt, irretrievably damaged, but think of all the good the football program did for young people. It brought millions into the school, billions really because of the profile it created, which has given a great life to thousands of young men and women. Some people had to get hurt but that happens. It’s really their fault in many ways, tempting Sandusky the way they did.”
Details of the victims have not been made public but it is believed unlikely that they offered any more or less temptation than any other children. Sandusky, it is believed, is just a creep.
“Joe doesn’t like going out this way, obviously, and he really does wish that the whole thing hadn’t happened. That Jerry didn’t like little boys, that it hadn’t been discovered, that they never had to deal with the whole thing. It’s really a pain and embarrassing,” continued the insider. “Obviously the bulk of the problem lies with Sandusky and he does hold him responsible, but he was a good coach so a lot of that can be forgiven. The boys on the other hand, well that’s a different story. They shouldn’t have gone with Jerry, it’s that simple.”
Sandusky will likely face his temptations once again when he faces trial for the assaults.
