LA LAKERS DENIED ENTRANCE TO ARIZONA FOR PLAYOFF GAME
May 20 2010
Phoenix, AZ - There are few debates in the current American experience as the one over illegal immigration. Of course the issue of immigration in the United States is a long and controversial one, after all the vast majority of the people who now live in
the country are either immigrants themselves or are the descendents of immigrants. Unlike the experiences in the old worlds of Asia, Europe, and Africa, the people of the United States, and of the Americas as a whole, are tied to their status as immigrants, something as controversial 500 years ago as it is today.
Of course the past is the past. One could argue that if you were to go back far enough people in Asia and Europe are also immigrants and with the way the borders in those continents have changed so much over the centuries, everyone belongs everywhere. Of course, history belongs to the victors and in the United States, the victors were clearly decided years ago, making immigration a still potent issue. At the forefront of that controversy is the state of Arizona which has been getting more press in the last few weeks than it has since the days of the OK corral. They’ve also been getting a lot

of attention for their growing feud with Los Angeles which has boycotted the state, and been beating them in the NBA Western Conference finals, leaving Arizona officials with no choice but to prevent the team from entering the state.
“I can acknowledge that we have decided to act in kind in respect to the city of Los Angeles. They have decided to boycott our state and so we will make it more difficult for them to come and go, no matter who might want to enter our fine state,” said a spokesperson for Governor Jan Brewer. “We are all fans of the game but we need to protect the interests of the people of Arizona. Normally we do not get involved in the comings and goings of our basketball teams but this case is a special one. We will make it as difficult as possible for the other team to enter our state.”
It’s not quite clear under NBA rules what would happen if a team was not allowed to play a game because of border politics, but should it result in a forfeit it’s believed the Phoenix Suns might have a chance at taking the series.
“I would bet that they will get past this and the Lakers will be allowed in the state but this could really rattle them which will give the Suns a shot. It would be ideal to have them stay out of the games entirely because realistically that is the only chance they have at winning,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “Of course the Lakers have the home court advantage. The Suns would still need to win at least one game in LA to take the series.”
Kobe Bryant, the best player on the Lakers, spent a significant amount of his youth living in Italy making him an easy target for law officials.
“The Lakers really are the best team in the league. The Cavaliers were solid up and down but they just don’t have the depth to make it work in the long run. The Celtics have a lot of depth but you can’t argue with the way the Magic are playing. I think the only way the Suns could win it all is to prevent anyone from entering the state,” continued Marvins. “I’m sure NBA officials haven’t read the Arizona law. I mean if the Attorney General and President haven’t read it there is no way a bunch of basketball dudes will have. It’ll be interesting to watch and see whether or not the Suns can turn this to their advantage.”
Currently the series is at 2-0 for the Lakers, both wins were formidable.
