LAKERS FANS VOW TO BURN CITY DOWN FOR NEXT CHAMPIONSHIP
June 19 2010
Los Angeles, CA – Sport has long had a patriotic tinge. As evidenced by the two big sporting events this year, the Olympics and the World Cup, nationalism and sport are intertwined. Even when attending a sporting event and standing for the national
anthem it’s clear that such patriotism is a part of the way sport works. Such loyalties also spread to domestic borders with cities tied to their teams with the same kind of fervour. Quite sensibly, when those teams win big trophies, the loyalists explode in celebration.
Such tribalism is of course tied to the very nature of sport, which itself is borne from our ancestors competing for land and food and women. Those sports teams allow their followers to live through them, to compete at a level of excellence they themselves will never achieve, and beating down a belligerent with no possibility of repercussions. Often times though a frenzy ensues in the wake of such a win with many people releasing all of that pent up energy and unleashing it on their hometown, as was the case in Los Angeles after the victory by the Lakers that brought the NBA championship to the city for a second straight time. With dozens of arrests, the city is just starting to recover from the chaos but fans have vowed that if a three-peat occurs, the city will burn to the ground.
“This has been great. The Lakers are the best team ever and they proved that on Thursday night. The Lakers are L.A. Kobe and Fisher are the man. I can’t wait for next season when they come out and whip everyone again. Hope the Celtics are back in the championship again, that would kill,” said a local rioter. “This isn’t the end of us though. They can take us down now but we will be back next year just like the Lakers. Next time though this whole thing is going down. We are going to prove that L.A. is the best city in the country by burning the entire thing to the ground.”
The planned epicentre for the rioting is the Staples Center itself. Fires will then spread from there across the city, consuming the greater Los Angeles area.
“The Lakers are really one of the great franchises in sports history. You could argue

that the Celtics with more championships are a better team, but you can’t argue with the legacy of the Lakers. Baylor, Chamberlin, Kareem, Magic, Shaq, Kobe. The franchise is virtually a Hall of Fame unto itself and few other teams in all of sports can claim that,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “The people of the city take great pride in that legacy as they should. Of course that also means the best at celebrating. L.A. isn’t really known as a party town but they are proving that they deserve to be near or even at the top when it comes to these kinds of celebrations.”
Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago have long been most associated with riots, though all three have had limited opportunities to showcase those talents in recent years.
“L.A. really has a chance to show the country what it can do. The biggest riot of the year will undoubtedly be whichever country wins the World Cup but if they can destroy the entire city then they will have established themselves as the winner next year. I just don’t see what anyone can do to top it,” continued Marvins. “I mean if someone goes an sets of a nuclear bomb that would render a city uninhabitable for hundreds of years that would top the L.A. plans, maybe, though nuclear devices are usually tough to get a hold of and rarely allocated for sports celebrations.”
Buffalo has reportedly also begun to burn their city down though they still haven’t won any championships.
