MEDICAL RESEARCH INDICATES THAT PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL MAY CAUSE INJURY
December 8 2010
New York, NY – There is inherent risk in anything we do. Walking the local convenience store or going for a shower can result in serious injury, possibly life-ending injury. That is the nature of life. Nothing is totally safe, nothing ever can be.
That is part of the agreement we make when we crawl out of bed every morning. Life is full of peril, danger, and even death and all of those things can be awaiting us around the next corner.
Some lives however carry with them not only the threat of injury, but promise of such. Professions such as police or military have embedded risks that go against the basic premise of human survival, but they are jobs that are necessary, jobs that keep the rest of us safe from dire injury and trauma. Sport is another one of those fields that carries with a high risk of injury. Whether the result of an errant pitch or a blocked dunk, the risk of injury is endemic to virtually all sports, however mounting medical evidence has started to show that one sport above all others carries with a serious risk of injury and that officials for the sport, the NFL, not only tolerate the violence that creates those injuries but actually supports such actions.
“I played 20 years ago in high school, and my coaches really pounded home the need for good form, to keep the head up to maintain the curvature of the head and spine to dissipate any forces from impact. But everything happens so fast on the field, all it takes is a tiny change in head position to get you in trouble,” said spinal surgeon Dr. Andrew Sama. “Such acts are embedded in the game and the violence that occurs is a direct cause of these injuries. Unfortunately there does not appear to be any will to discourage such acts of violence and in many cases it appears that the powers that be in the league actually embrace violence as the best way to play the game.”
Founded in 1920, the NFL has become the most successful and financially powerful sport in the United States.
“We are not just talking about cuts and bruises here. We are talking about serious
head and spinal trauma that can seriously infringe on a person’s ability to live a normal life both in the time in which they play the sport and after they retire,” continued Sama. “Injuries are going to happen in any sport but what is clear in the NFL is that the number and severity of injuries is much greater than in any other sport and that the officials and leadership in the league are not only disinterested in reducing the level of violence but are actually encouraging the athletes to engage in such actions. It must be made clear that these actions cause serious trauma to the individuals involved and any notion to the otherwise is simply false.”
While exact numbers are not available, the NFL is widely considered one of the most successful professional sports in the world with more than twenty teams in the league valued at over $1 billion USD.
“Anytime you get large, competitive people in a crowded area fighting to defeat the others there is going to be some risk of violence and injury. There is no sport, at least not yet, that involves people sitting around calmly watching television or knitting. Sport requires action, and action can result in violence and injury,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “That said, some sports are largely able to avoid the types of injuries that we see in the NFL which suggests that some things that could be done simply aren’t being done. The NFL and the owners make a lot of money out of these players that go around hitting one another which suggests that they have some vested interest in seeing this violence, namely money, and that needs to be addressed.”
NFL officials could not be reached for comment.
