MILWAUKEE BREWERS TO BE MELTED DOWN INTO MEMORABILIA

May 7 2010

Milwaukee, WI – There are some cities which are undeniably sports towns, towns that connect with either particular teams or any team that comes around. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Manchester, and a whole host of other cities can brett favre
reasonably lay claim to the title of ‘sports town’, though they do have favourites. Smaller towns also often have strong connections with their sports teams. St. Louis and the Cardinals as an example, or Edmonton and the Oilers are just a couple of the small towns who have almost fused with their teams.

Milwaukee is one of those cities which has, for almost a century, been in lockstep with the Green Bay Packers. One of the most storied franchises in sports the Packers are actually owned by the people of Wisconsin whose faith in the team has been met by the players and management with decades of success, eleven NFL championships, and three Super Bowl championships. The city also has another team, the Brewers of baseball, which hasn’t had the same kind of success and thus limited loyalty from the city. Though still reasonably fluid by baseball standards, due in large part to limited things to do in the city, the team has long been on the lower rungs of the sport. Now the ownership of the team is considering a new tactic to engage fans, melting down the team and creating ‘really cool’ memorabilia.prince fielder

“Nothing like this has ever been attempted before though it has come up in owner meetings in the past. No one has ever had the guts to actually go through with it and more importantly such suggestions used to meet with a great deal of protest, but that has all changed,” said an MLB insider. “From what I understand the owner, Mark Attanasio, kind of joked about it at the last meeting but that led into a serious discussion that has extended into action. It wasn’t a matter of approval, the other owners are actually helping to facilitate to process. Well, except for Drayton McLane of the Astros, he’s a bit of jerk.”

It’s not yet clear if the players themselves will be broken down into their component parts or just the equipment and facilities.milwaukee brewers

“The Brewers are just one of those teams that can’t seem to get past who they are. The Bengals and Clippers are very much the same way. Occasionally they have success but for the most part they are just the whipping boys, which are necessary in any system, but does nothing for the fans and players,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “By doing this they can finally give something back to the community. The memorabilia, which presumably will be of teams that people actually like, will be able to give the people of Milwaukee something they have never had in respect to baseball, pride, and that is good for everyone.”

The Brewers are expected to play through the 2011 season at which time their stadium lease is to be renegotiated.rickie weeks milwaukee brewers

“We will have to wait and see whether or not the players themselves are included in this deal. Traditionally when teams dissolve the player are put up for a kind of auction, spread to other teams but that all depends on their contracts,” continued Marvins. “I’m sure there are basic rules protecting the health and safety of players in the collective bargaining agreement but in certain circumstances the individual contract can override that. I’d expect that there is limited language in the agreement to prevent players from being melted down, though likely it is inferred in the spirit of the contract. It will be interesting to watch to be sure.”

A similar plan has been considered and rejected for the Kansas City Royals. It was determined that the elemental value of the team wouldn’t be worth the fuel to melt them down.
