PEYTON MANNING SET TO BECOME THE HIGHEST PAID FANTASY FOOTBALL PLAYER EVER
September 8 2011
Indianapolis, IN – Among the many big stories to come out of this past NFL offseason one of the biggest was the signing of Peyton Manning to the largest contract in NFL history. Part of the sensation behind that story was most certainly the dollars, though few would argue that he isn’t worth it, but the bigger part was that it
meant that Manning would finish his career with the Colts. In the free agency era, few players start and end their careers with one time, especially the greats.
Manning, though, has always been the exception. While he has certainly had challenges on the field he has always been the real deal, the player that everyone thought he could and would be and the new contract merely reflects that. Unfortunately, multiple surgeries appear to have taken their toll on the quarterback and rumours suggest that he may not play at all this season. Manning, being the player that he is, is apparently not letting his health get him down, vowing to fill out the terms of his contract through fantasy football.
“To say I am disappointed in not being able to play is an understatement. The best part about football is being out there on the field playing with my teammates,” Manning said in a statement. “It will be tough not to be out there playing for the organization and our fans. I simply am not healthy enough to play, and I am doing everything I can to get my health back. The team will do fine without me, and I know for sure that I will miss them much more than they miss me.”
Manning signed a 5-year, $90 million deal shortly after the lockout ended. He had back surgery earlier in the off season and just recently had an operation on his neck.
“It’s not looking good, honestly. I mean he will try and come back, he’s a competitor to be sure, but it’s really not looking good. I mean no one will fault him, no one is going to hold that massive contract over his head or anything, but he is still disappointed,” said a Colts insider. “This has been such a major part of his life for so long that he just doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t want to sit on the sidelines and do nothing. That’s why he’s considering the fantasy football option. He had some options and the only other one that really intrigued him was sitting on his couch playing Madden but he decided to go with Fantasy Football. He really feels that is the best way for him to contribute to the Colts.”
Brother Eli, who is currently healthy, has apparently also decided to start up a fantasy team in his spare time. It will likely not be as good as Peyton’s.
“Now he is the highest paid quarterback and the highest paid fantasy team owner in history. Obviously, he isn’t doing it for the money, he’s doing it for the game, but still... Anyways, he is feeling an obligation to the fantasy league and he will give it his all, considering how much he’s getting paid and everything,” continued the insider. “I can tell you that he has put together a great team. We’ll see how good it really is when the season starts but it is looking good. I think everyone will be impressed with the performance this year.”
Manning’s fantasy team is expected to do well for the majority of the season and then choke right when it counts.
