POLICYMAKERS CONSIDERING STIMULUS PACKAGE FOR NFL FANS
September 12 2010
Washington, D.C. – There is perhaps no greater period of celebration in the United States then the one that occurs during the first few weeks of September. Bigger than Thanksgiving, bigger than Christmas, bigger than the Fourth of July, September
brings a national celebration unfettered by race, religion, politics or social status. The source of that celebration is of course the start of the NFL season which for a few weeks unites the country from coast to coast before finally forcing divisions and arguments until next September rolls around.
More than a sport, football has become an integral part of the American experience. It is perhaps fitting that games are played on Sundays with more people now attending their couch than their church but it is deeper than that. Football has become a tactile part of being American, integrated into other holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas and in many ways changing those holidays into total football experiences. However many Americans have been denied the full NFL experience in recent years due to the hard economic realities facing them and the league itself. High prices for everything NFL, from tickets to soft drinks, have left
many watching their favourite team from afar rather than engaging in a pilgrimage to their local shrine. Recognizing this, a new initiative by the Obama administration is seeking to level the playing field by introducing a new economic stimulus aimed directly at the average football fanatic.
“Bill C-62156, or as we’ve playfully started to call it, the Pigskin Playbook, is aimed at ordinary Americans who have found themselves in financial difficulty as a result of pursuing their love of America’s favorite sport,” said U.S. Representative Ben King. “The idea behind this bill is to compensate football fans who have suffered economic difficulties because they have attended professional football games. These funds are not to be used to facilitate further attendance, but to allow people who have endured hardship to pay for the essentials of non-football related life.”
The bill will affect different markets in different ways and in some areas, such as Jacksonville, will provide incentive for people to actually attend games.
“As much as we talk about parity in the NFL the realities for fans are far from that. The teams themselves suffer too with places like Jacksonville forced to rent out space for the elderly to walk during game days but places like New England charging huge fees and still selling out every
single game,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “Caught in the middle of all this has been the fans who genuinely want to engage in the NFL experience but simply cannot afford to do so, a scenario that has been played out all across the country in all markets. In some areas that has simply meant no fans and in others only the elite many of whom have a less than enthusiastic fans.”
Dallas currently has the highest ticket price at $159.65 for top seats.
“By introducing this fund more fans will be engaged, they will be more integrated into
the American experience and therefore become more loyal to the country as a whole and not just to their team. While the money can’t be used directly to purchase tickets or hotdogs, it will give them some breathing room and allow them to spend their other money on things like milk and bread,” continued Marvins. “Unlike other stimulus packages this money goes directly to the people rather than being filtered down through corporations who then pass a portion onto the regular folks. This money goes right into the pockets of ordinary Americans and allows them to no longer have to choose between feeding their children and attending sporting events and that’s a good thing.”
The new package still has to be approved by congress before any funds are allocated.
