ROGER CLEMENS LOOKING TO GET BACK INTO BASEBALL AFTER TRIAL ENDS
July 14 2011
Washington, D.C. – There was a time when Roger Clemens was easily the best pitcher to ever play professional baseball. In his prime, no one could stand up to Clemens. His dominance on the mound was unlike anything that had ever happened
before or since. It’s easy to state such a thing, but his seven Cy Young awards and eleven All-Star appearances act as confirmation that such platitudes are not hollow. Clemens was easily one of the greatest players to ever touch a baseball.
Unfortunately, for him, just as it has been for many of his peers, Clemens achievements have been clouded by accusations of steroid use. Taken on pure numbers, the late 1980’s and 1990’s were one of the great periods in all of baseball, but coloured with the taint of steroids, much of that acclaim will be lost to history. Clemens himself has never been found guilty of steroid use, but the deed and the perception of the deed are sometimes intertwined, as they are with ‘Rocket’ Roger. That perception was reinforced with Clemens on trial amid accusations that he lied to investigators about his steroid use. However, that trial ended in the second day after prosecutors showed jurors inadmissible evidence, potentially leaving the 48-year old Clemens free to return to the league, after he gets back into shape at least.
“Roger is very happy that this nightmare is over. This has been a really difficult time and he is eager to get back to his normal life. So much of the last few years have
been consumed by this talk and that has been very tough. Now that it’s over he has finally started to think about the future again,” said an insider. “What he really wants is to return to baseball. He feels like he’s still got it, that he can still compete. It’s going to take a little bit to get back into shape, but he’s always been able to get that going pretty quickly. He feels like he could be back in playing shape within a month or so.”
Clemens retired in 2007 after 23 seasons.
“He realizes that he’s getting on in years, but the one thing that all the players of his generation have shown is a kind of spooky level of longevity. All of them have been able to play late into their lives and that gives him confidence that he will be able to make a quick comeback,” continued the insider. “He’s been working out kind of casually, but now that he can get back to his home gym around all his regular workout buddies he thinks he can get things back in no time. He’s already had conversations with a couple of teams and thinks he could be back on the mound before the playoffs. Frankly, he thinks he could be even better than before. His arm feels great.”
Clemens has reportedly been dominating practice sessions for a local little league team.
“I think it’s very unlikely that we will see Clemens back in baseball. He just carries too much baggage. Inevitably he’s going to have to answer all kinds of questions that have nothing to do with baseball and that will distract from playing as well as the cohesion of the team. Few teams are likely going to be willing to put up with that,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “I’m sure he can get in shape really, really fast. He’s always been able to do that, almost spookily so, but the baggage is pretty significant. That said, if he can throw a good seven innings any type of distraction might be something a team is willing to deal with. Heck, he might even be able to teach the younger player’s a thing or two about keeping in shape and that alone could make it worth their while to bring him on.”
Fellow retiree Barry Bonds has reportedly been working out lately in his efforts to get back in the league.
