SCOTTIE PIPPEN ASKS FOR DONATIONS IN HALL OF FAME SPEECH
August 14 2010
Springfield, IL – There are many great pairings in the history of sport but for one generation there is none greater than Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Those two players led their team and the city of Chicago to six NBA championships in eight
seasons and helped to bring the game to all new levels of popularity. Thought many have argued that the dup was driven by Jordan, perhaps the greatest player in the history of the game, it was in Pippen that he found a partner that helped drive him to even greater heights.
Many have argued that without the chemistry between the two players that neither would have been as great. That criticism may or may not be true but the reality is that the two of them did work together and together they made basketball magic. After years under Jordan’s shadow, Pippen was finally able to earn his due on Friday upon being inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame. That moment was redemption for Pippen whose life outside of the game endured as many challenges as his life inside. His struggles, particularly his financial struggles, have been as well documented as his career achievements, two things that came into confluence on Friday when Pippen asked for a little bit cash during his induction into the Hall.
“Thank you very much. What an honor it is for me as a basketball player to have the all time great presenting to me here tonight. It was so valuable to me as a player to see someone who had the same determination, passion, and love for the game. Who knew that number 23 would be here 23 years later presenting me into the NBA Hall of Fame,” said Pippen of his former on-court partner. “I have so much to be thankful for. I have been able to live my dream of playing basketball, surrounded by people I love and being cheered on by the best fans in the world who would really help me out if they would go to to my Facebook page and make a donation.”
Pippen has reportedly lost much of the $120 million he made throughout his career due in part to poor investments.
“Scottie Pippen deserves to be in the Hall without a doubt. There is always going to be debate as to whether or not he would have been as great without Jordan, though few would debate that greatness was in him, but in the end it doesn’t really matter. That is the way things played out and likely the pairing made both of them better,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “That is the way pairings work. Would Jordan have found a different wing man and still been great? Would Pippen have been able to be a star unto himself if he was out of Jordan’s shadow? Would neither of them been as great? We will never know but what we do know is that the partnership worked well, really, really well.”
Jordan has reportedly offered no financial support to his former partner.
“Unfortunately things haven’t worked out so well for Pippen outside of basketball. That

seems to happen quite frequently with athletes. They spend their entire school lives
concentrating on sports rather than on learning how to behave like regular people and then are suddenly given everything they could ever want and simply don’t know what to do with it and these kinds of things tend to happen,” continued Marvins. “I have to say that requesting money at the awards seems a little classless though to be fair it is probably the biggest platform he has had in a long time. It is a good opportunity. Unfortunately I doubt that many people will donate, I mean he’s already done his time and people are ready to move on. It’s not like he’s Michael Jordan or anything.”
Jordan reportedly left the ceremony in a Bentley he later gave to a homeless man at the airport. Pippen took the bus with money fellow inductee Karl Malone had in his pocket.
