TORONTO MAYOR SEEKING NFL, NHL TEAMS
January 27 2011
Toronto, Canada – As far as major cities go, Toronto has always been on the lower end of the spectrum. Despite being one of the largest, wealthiest, and most cultured cities in North America the 416 has simply never gained international recognition, even

on its own continent, despite boasting far more assets than many more popular locations such as Atlanta or Boston. That limited public appeal, however, hasn’t meant much to the growth of the city and the surrounding region which millions of people call home.
It is of course very unlikely that Toronto will ever garner the kind of international attention that it’s brethren like New York and Los Angeles enjoy, but in its small northern corner of the world the city is doing quite well, and if new Mayor Rob Ford has anything to say about, the city will continue to thrive in the coming years.
Throughout the city, the new Mayor has caused tension and division with his hard line attitude and intent to radically transform the way the city is being run. While his ambitions will likely fall short, as they tend to do in politics, it hasn’t stopped Ford from making big claims and stating big ambitions including his desire to establishing both an NFL and NHL team in the city.
“How can we bring tourism to Toronto? How can we create jobs? Great fit would be an NFL team. Toronto is great sports town and with our population I think we could support multiple professional sports leagues. We already have an NBA, CFL, MLS, and MLB team and I think bringing hockey and the NFL to town would be a perfect fit,” said Ford. “Toronto is an international city that deserves these international leagues. I will do whatever I can as Mayor to facilitate bringing professional football and professional hockey to Toronto as soon as possible.”
The city currently plays host to the Toronto Argonauts, a professional team in the Canadian Football league.
“Toronto has proven itself more than capable of supporting multiple sports teams and I think it makes sense to bring more to the city. The Bills in Toronto series has done

really well, however I think there are too many obstacles to seeing a NFL franchise permanently implanted in the city, whether people like to hear that or not,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “There is no stadium in the city capable of housing an NFL team, they would be limited in advertising revenue which is a huge part of the league’s business model, and there are significant markets in the U.S., like Los Angeles, which don’t have teams. I think it would be a huge challenge getting an NFL franchise in the city. Frankly, I don’t think it will ever happen. An NHL franchise is a different story however.”
There have been multiple attempts, all unsuccessful, to bring an NFL franchise to the city
“Hockey certainly has a history in the city and so I think that would be the smarter move. I think if they were to bring a real team into the city the fans would flock to the arena. Hockey just fits more with Canada and I think real team would work well in the city,” continued Marvins. “Football too has a long history in the city, the Argonauts date back to the late 19th century, and it could do okay in the city but probably no better than a mid-market team in the States, maybe a Tampa Bay. That just wouldn’t cut it for the league and so I think they should probably pursue more realistic expectations, like hockey.”
Minor league hockey has been popular in the city for a number of years.
