DAUNTE CULPEPPER RETIREMENT PROMPTS NFL TO WIPE 1999 OFF THE RECORD BOOKS

September 4 2008

Miami, FL – The retirement of Daunte Culpepper brings the disastrous 1999 draft nearly to an end, with only one high profile player left still active in the league. The end of the career of one of the most prominent players selected in that year’s draft has prompted the NFL to deny that the year ever took place.

daunte culpepper in fur"When free agency began this year, I had a new sense of excitement about continuing to rebuild my career in the same way that I had rebuilt my knee after my catastrophic injury in 2005," said Culpepper. "Unfortunately, what I found out was that the league did not share any of the optimism about me as an unrestricted free agent that I expected. In fact, there was an overwhelming sense that there was no room for me among this year's group of quarterbacks."

Culpepper, along with fellow 1999 alumnus Tim Couch, Cade McNown, and Akili Smith have all had disappointing stints in the league. Only Donovan McNabb, Culpepper’s co-star of the draft, has had any long term success amongst the quarterbacks’ selected. A few other players, namely pro bowler Chris McAlister, and cornerback Antoine Winfield have had success in their careers, but that is little comfort to the star driven nature of the NFL.

“Cornerbacks, guards, tackles, they just don’t do it for the league. Important positions no doubt, but those guys ain’t getting soup commercials,” said Scrape TV sports analyst Mark Marvins. “1999 was a tough year that began with so much optimism, but it’s been bust after bust. Culpepper at least performed, and McNabb snagged a few commercials, but for the most part, that season was a waste. It’s not surprising the NFL wants to forget about it.”clean slate

Of course with McNabb still an active and prominent player, it makes the job a little more difficult. Some have speculated that the league will go ahead with its plans to eradicate the 1999 season regardless.

“Well, McNabb plays for the Eagles. And with all due respect to Philadelphia and the Eagles fans, it’s not like they are an important team,” continued Marvins. “They are one of a few times that have some respect but sort of fall into this who really cares category. The Vikings, Seahawks, Cardinals, Chargers, they all kind of fill that hole. They could probably get away just fine with getting rid of McNabb and not hurt much. Realistically he probably doesn’t have a whole lot of time left anyway.”

The league has reportedly already removed official records of the 1999 season from their home office. The plan if to have all information about the season removed by the end of the month.
