APPLE STARTS WORK ON DIAL UP IPHONE
December 19 2009
Cupertino, CA – Only ten years ago seeing some walking around with a cell phone was an unusual thing, but now the exact opposite is true. That is the way technology tends to move; something that seemed almost disposable to one generation become

ubiquitous in the next, leaving the elders scratching their heads as to what all the fuss is about. With the cell phone market now drawing in billions of dollars annually the idea of a world without them seems almost anathema, a world almost totally foreign to our own.
The rise of the cell phone has of course made those billions for a select few companies; Nokia, Samsung, and LG chief among them. Their star has been fading though as Apple’s iPhone continues to draw huge numbers, blending the simplistic and beautiful design the company is known for as well as now industry standard functionality. Apple’s success though isn’t as thorough as it has been in the MP3 market as evidenced by the recent introduction of a phone from Google as well as continued success from traditional competitors. Apple though, always the innovator, isn’t taking the challenge lying down and will reach back into the past in order to secure their future.
“The iPhone DU, that’s what they are calling it for the moment anyway, is a totally different way of thinking. The traditional razor in computing is that faster is better but Apple has always thought a little differently and they, we, are doing that now. This new version of the iPhone is going to change the market forever,” said an Apple insider who preferred to remain anonymous. “Basically they are going back to the old tech. They realize that not everyone has access to high speed networks and that some people don’t even want high speed service and the costs that are associated with that. That’s what this is all about. We want everyone to be using Apple phones even if they are using cut down versions of them. That’s kind of different for Apple but this market is way too competitive to be playing ego games.”
The company has already been touting its 4g phone which will significantly outstrip the current version of the phone. The DU is expected to release alongside that version of the phone.
“While it will give full fledged multimedia cell phone access to people who wouldn’t traditionally have the ability to use those services, one has to wonder if it’s not a little gimped. After all most ISP’s are trying to get people to move away from dial up and content providers on the web are more or less ignoring protocols for people with low download speeds. It’s just not the way tech is supposed to move,” said Scrape TV Technology analyst Ken Kevins. “I suppose they have done their research though. I mean they wouldn’t spend the money and the prestige on something they hadn’t thoroughly researched, not Apple. They’ve had little else but success.”
One disadvantage of the phone will be likely be the need to connect to a phone line, muting the portability benefit of the cell phone concept.
“I can’t imagine that there will be a whole lot of people who will want to go out and buy an expensive new phone that requires them to sit in their kitchen. I mean it will double as web access for people who don’t have computers but will of course have a very small screen and take forever,” continued Kevins. “Suppose though it doesn’t matter, at least for Apple fans. I’m sure they will sell millions of phones before anyone realizes how irritating dial up really is.”
In related news Google has reportedly removed the blinking logo from their homepage.
