BILL GATES ENCOURAGES YOUNG PEOPLE TO AVOID COLLEGE
September 7 2010
Aspen, CO – There have been few success stories in the American experience as formidable and remarkable as that of Bill Gates. It isn’t just the billions and billions of dollars that makes Gates’ story so remarkable; it is the influence his success has had

on the rest of the world. His company and software may have started to show their age in recent years but there is little doubt that in the early days of home computing, the introduction of Windows fundamentally changed the market and the way we interact with machines and helped to form the modern world.
Perhaps most remarkably Gates did all of this on a hope and dream. He and partner Paul Allen had a vision for something they felt could change the world and pursued it at all costs. That has obviously paid dividends for Gates and the rest of the world and is likely something he wouldn’t change if he had the chance, and is now advising young people to follow in his footsteps. One of the more remarkable parts of the Gates’ story is the fact that he is a college dropout, leaving Harvard in 1975 to pursue his dream. Now Gates has encouraged that behaviour in younger students, stating that textbooks are now useless and any facility that use them archaic and out of touch.
“Bill doesn’t believe that physical textbooks are the way of the future. Things like netbooks and ereaders are taking off exponentially and will provide the future of education at a person’s fingertips. The cost of those devices is still quite high but in the coming years those prices will drop and make them more accessible to average users which will increase adoption,” said a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation insider. “He recently had a talk and the Aspen Foundation where talked about this very thing but frankly he went a little soft on things there. His idea for the future is really far more radical and involves people simply avoiding college entirely and moving towards software-based education exclusively, at least on devices using Microsoft software.”
Despite not working full time for the company Gates still owns majority share in the company he helped found and thus draws billions of dollars annually.
“There has been, frankly, no better technology evangelist than Bill Gates in history. People look to the failures of the company and the perception that they are a
monopolistic giant that strivers to consume everything and while some of that might be true, they have also pushed the boundaries of technology that has changed the world,” said Scrape TV Technology analyst Ken Kevins. “Sure, they want to sell the next version of Windows or Office but their efforts have also helped digitize medical records and helped allow people from all over the world communicate in an instant. He has really made up for any ills he has created in the world and appears to be trying to continue doing that.”
Gates has received an honorary diploma from Harvard. He apparently destroyed the original after scanning it into an early version of Microsoft Visio.
“College is still an important part of modern society and likely will remain that way for a number of years to come. Gates is a very smart man and certainly recognizes that fact but if he can get even a few people to avoid going to school and continuing to use Microsoft software then he will have won a major battle. Ultimately all wars are won with small victories,” continued Kevins. “Gate’s voice carries a lot of weight amongst a certain group of people and this will certainly encourage some people to either avoid college entirely or, in the case of people who are already there, to leave and buy iPhones, sorry Zunes.”
Microsoft shares jumped 2 percent on word of the Gates discussion.
