DISILLUSIONED FACEBOOK USER QUITS SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE

April 29 2011

Seattle, WA – The rise of Facebook has been nothing but a remarkable business tale. Rising from a small college network utility to one of the largest companies the web has yet birthed is a great tale of American business but also a testament to the power and mark zuckerberg time magazine
growing ubiquity of the web. Though other companies will likely come around and usurp the success of Facebook, the story of that site will stand as one of the great stories of the medium and a model, both positive and negative, for all companies that come afterwards.

Like any shooting start though the success of the site hasn’t been without its challenges and issues. Serious concerns over privacy and a constantly fluctuating philosophy by the management has left many questioning the company and their ultimate motives. The company has also faced internal lawsuits from former collaborators, and drawn unwanted but inevitable attention from spammers. Of course with all great success comes great challenge and those issues were bound to happen as they always do for major companies. Of course not all of those issues are isolated to the corporate world of Facebook. Many of those issues have become fodder for bloggers and news organizations which in turn have caused them to trickle down to users causing many to argue and rebel and in the case of a Seattle man leave the site entirely.

“Frankly I just got sick of everything to do with it. I found I was going on the site everyday and not doing anything. All of my friends on there are either people I talk to regularly or people that I don’t and having them on Facebook didn’t really change that
at all,” said Louis, who preferred to keep his full name private. “When you add in all those privacy issues it just didn’t seem like something to keep pursuing. It was hard using facebook
but ultimately I felt it was best to just end the relationship completely and it feels great. I’m telling all my real life friends to do the same thing.”

Louis said he had suspended his account a number of times before eventually deleting it entirely, something experts say is in line with other addictive behaviours.

“Facebook unto itself is great tool for keeping in touch with friends and family members, particularly those who live a great distance away or you are unable to keep in regular contact with for one reason or another. Unfortunately for some people it becomes an addiction and that can cause real problems,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “For most people something like Facebook has this intangible kind of appeal. Most people can say why they go on the site but can’t really claim to like the things they are doing. Some genuinely like the experience but for the majority of people it’s slightly fatiguing yet they continue, wanting to make sure they don’t miss anything even if there is nothing to miss, making quitting very challenging.”facebook friends

Studies have shown that up to 20 per cent of users have considered quitting at one time or another but have ultimately backed away.

“I’ve tested the quitting thing just to see how it goes. They hit you with all these profile pictures, tell you how these people will miss you, and then they give you time to think it over. This is the first case I’ve heard of where somebody actually had the guts to see the resignation through all the way,” continued Welp. “It will be interesting to see if this person sticks with it, that’s the real challenge. It’s fine to quit but if you come crawling back, which is a distinct possibility, then it is kind of rendered moot but we will see.”

We contacted Facebook for comment but received no response at press time.
