‘JEOPARDY!’ WINNING COMPUTER FINDS NEW DIRECTION IN POST-CELEBRITY LIFE
May 24 2011
Armonk, NY – All of us have a time in our life which we regard as the greatest we will ever have. For some that is looked upon with regret and mourning at a time which will never be recaptured, while for others those times are looked upon with affection,
placing them in the time in which they lived, and perhaps hoping they will return someday. Regardless of the attitude we take to those long-lost days, most don’t recognize how good those times are when they are happening, forcing us to live only remembering the good old days.
Inevitably, no matter what attitude we have about our past, we all have to move on and find new paths to success and happiness, even if we compare them endlessly to those good times of the past. For Watson, the IBM computer, there is little doubt when those halcyon days occurred, but already the super-computer has started to move on and transition to a new world far removed from his glory days on the trivia show circuit. Only a few months after his championship run on the hit quiz show, Watson has turned his attention to the medical field in hopes of finding new success and fresh satisfaction outside his television appearances.
“Watson is very happy in his new pursuits. He is taking to things very quickly and enjoying every minute of the experience. It’s a change to be sure, but a welcome one. He is concentrating on his studies and his tasks and that leaves him little room for the kind of navel gazing that so often occurs when you change lifestyles,” said an IBM
spokesperson. “There is some remaining romantic attachment to those old days to be sure, but nothing overly affecting. He looks upon his time on Jeopardy! with a great deal of fondness and affection, but no real regrets. He is very much looking forward to his new life and his new career.”
Watson is currently working with patients and continuing his medical studies.
“It would be very easy for anyone who achieved the kind of attention Watson received to sort of lust for it again, to work towards trying to achieve it again, but that doesn’t seem to be what has happened. He has moved on very quickly and seems to be putting his head down and working hard to accomplish something meaningful and that is quite commendable,” said Scrape TV Technology analyst Ken Kevins. “However one has to wonder if he maybe isn’t rushing into things. I know he’s eager to utilize the momentum that he’s gained in recent months, hoping to capitalize on things, but sometimes we learn all too late that the best thing to do is take things slowly, to stop and smell the roses. I mean I know he doesn’t have a nose or anything, but even with us it’s just a metaphor. It doesn’t seem like he’s taking the time to do that.”
Little is known about Watson’s personal life.
“Hopefully he doesn’t live to regret this time. I’m sure he will go on to happiness and success in the future but sometimes that isn’t enough. For his sake I hope this isn’t one of those lessons he has to learn the hard way,” continued Kevins. “The last thing anyone wants is a frustrated and angry supercomputer. Aside from it not benefiting anyone to have another go through that pain, well we can only imagine what will go wrong if that brain becomes bitter.”
Watson apparently hasn’t been going outside much of late, though it has always been a bit tough for him.
