LULZSEC HACKER GROUP TAKES DOWN BRAZIL
June 22 2011
Brasilia, Brazil – When Sony lost control of its servers in May everyone assumed that the incident would blow over quickly. That the company would readily restore service and that the people involved in what has become the biggest cybercrime in
history would simply vanish. After all, they were a bunch of computer nerds. They weren’t revolutionaries or people with some grand vision of a new world order, they were just a bunch of punks causing problems. That, as it turns out, was not the case.
Since that invasion, the group known as LulzSec (Lulz Security), has started attacking sites all over the world. Corporate servers owned by Nintendo, Black & Berg Cybersecurity Consulting, Bethesda Game Studios, Mediafire and dozens others have been invaded. The group has also reportedly hacked into government databases including ones affiliated with the FBI, CIA, and the Nation Health Service in the U.K. Those high profile attacks, on formidable targets, has made it clear that the group is no longer a band of merry pranksters but rather and organized group intent on causing chaos for reasons known only to them. That became very evident on Wednesday when the group attacked the government websites and servers in Brazil, temporarily knocking them offline and essentially wiping the nation off the map for a few hours in what could be the first of a series of attacks against sovereign governments.
“Yes, we were taken offline for a number of hours but we believe the situation has been resolved. This was a focussed and deliberate attack against our country and against our sovereignty and is not the type of action which we will take lightly. These
acts are criminal and an offence to the Brazilian people,” said a government spokesperson by phone. “We are still under attack from these forces. We are in more control than we were a few hours ago but the attacks are continuing and are causing a great deal of problems for us. We do not want to again have our access to the rest of the world removed.”
The attack was apparently launched by a domestic branch of the group.
“On the surface these seems like pranks by a bunch of nerds and geeks but it is clear that something else is starting to form here. The Sony debacle caused millions of dollars in damage which is not a prank, is not something like spray painting a building. This is an organized and disciplined attack against a major corporation and shows that the ambition of these hackers is much greater than just simple hacking,” said Scrape TV Technology analyst Ken Kevins. “This attack on Brazil is an example of that. They are obviously going after larger and larger targets and seem to have no fear of retribution. More than that, they seem to have the ability to take down these targets. They aren’t just issuing threats, they are making it happen and that, combined with the lack of fear and the ambition, makes them very dangerous indeed.”
It’s not clear why Brazil in particular was attacked.
“This may well have been a warning to other countries. In the big picture Brazil doesn’t really matter all that much so if they go away for a little while, they go away. We can deal with that but it shows that the group has no respect for borders and that means they could very well take out another country and probably do it for more than a few hours,” continued Kevins. “They have shown that they are more than willing to take down a country and that, if it goes badly, could cause a lot of problems for a lot of people. This is a little more important than not being able to play your game online, this could shift borders and politics and potentially change the world order. It’s a very big deal.”
The group did take Panama offline for three weeks last month, although no one noticed.
