MPAA THREATENS TO PULL GOOGLE OFF THE INTERNET

February 12 2011

Washington, D.C. – For most people entertainment products are simply that, entertainment. Books, movies, video games, and movies are distractions and passions, but ultimately just additions to day-to-day life. The reality however is that the fighter poster
the companies which produce those products are something else entirely, multi-billion dollar companies whose influence span the globe, wielding not only economic power but real political punch in the form of union control and lobby groups. Entertainment companies are not just docile forces providing us with distraction, they are power players that impact real lives.

In the movie industry, the undeniable biggest dog on the block, much of that political and social power is derived through on entity, the Motion Picture Association of America which has been, for almost nine decades, the voice and aggression that has driven the industry. Through the power it has wielded the MPAA has been able to aggressively push the interests of the corporations that make movies and bent the will of fans without them knowing what was happening. In the modern era the MPAA has turned much of its attention to the growing influence of downloading which many fear may mark the end of the power of the industry. By aggressively pursuing downloader’s in an effort to sustain the industry, the MPAA has alienate many fans with threats and aggression. Now though, the organization may have come up against its biggest challenge after threatening to remove internet giant Google from the internet.pirates

“Copyright infringement also violates your ISP’s terms of service and could lead to limitation or suspension of your Internet service. You should take immediate action to prevent your Internet account from being used for illegal activities,” the MPAA noted in a statement to Google. “An MPAA website, www.respectcopyrights.org, offers step-by-step instructions to ensure that your Internet account is not being used to violate the copyright laws. Also, the site can point you to an array of legal choices for enjoying movies and TV shows online. You can also learn there how theft of motion pictures and TV shows damages our economy and costs thousands of Americans their jobs.”green hornet poster

Google has received upwards of 100 such warnings in the last few months, far more than the average number sent to most ISP’s.

“The movie industry saw what happened the music industry and have been in panic mode trying to prevent the same thing from happening to them. It’s difficult to tell whether or not that aggressive behaviour has had any impact on the business in terms of protecting it, but it has certainly brought a lot of attention to the concern,” said Scrape TV Legal analyst Gabe Hawthorne. “The MPAA is the bulldog protesting the industry. Those threats to remove people from the internet have no legal basis, meaning they can’t be enforced unto themselves. The MPAA would have to take the individuals to court to enforce any kind of penalty, but it is likely going to get to that stage eventually.”man using laptop

Automated notices are sent to ISP’s which are then forwarded to users. Google is its own ISP.

“Attacking Joe Blow in Delaware is one thing, but going after a company like Google is something else entirely. Their legal footing is the same but the power of going after an entity like Google is something else. If they were able to successfully scare Google into behaving everyone else would fall in line, and since their business is entirely reliant on internet access, they would be more willing to bend rather than fight,” continued Hawthorne. They won’t remove Google from the internet, I think that would be more than a little difficult, but they could easily scare them just enough to push them into compliance and that would push everyone over. I doubt Google would fight, I mean the internet would go down without them.”

Google executives deny any illegal downloading.
