MARK ZUCKERBERG MAY BE THE NEXT TO GET FIRED, CANCER, DIE YOUNG
October 12 2011
Menlo Park, CA – Inevitably, when Steve Jobs passed away the speculation about who would take over started to become the primary conversation. Most of that talk revolved around Apple and who would take creative control of the company, but some
of it, increasing in the week since his death, has started to look to a much wider goal, about who will take over for Jobs’ vision and leadership in the tech community at large.
Because of his youth and because of the high profile of his company, the bulk of that speculation has revolved around Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder. Like Jobs, Zuckerberg is undoubtedly brilliant and though he has been awkward in the past, his public persona has solidified in recent years. Zuckerberg too was friends with Jobs, the latter taking him under his wing which has led to speculation that Jobs himself saw the Facebook genius as his heir apparent.
Of course, many things will happen in the next thirty years and there may in fact never be another Steve Jobs, but it is very possible that Zuckerberg will try provided he gets fired, comes back, gets cancer and dies young.
“The two men share a lot of similar traits but that doesn’t mean much, really. What defined Jobs wasn’t his early days, it was his comeback. People look back on the early days of Apple through rose-coloured glasses but if he hadn’t comeback with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad and everything else that has happened in the last few years he wouldn’t be considered a genius,” said Scrape TV Technology analyst Ken Kevins. “It was that obstacle that made him great and that is the one thing that Zuckerberg is really lacking. He too quickly became the face of the company and thus he likely won’t be fired anytime soon meaning that one of the defining periods for Jobs will be lost to him forever.”
Jobs was fired from his company in 1985 only to come back in 1996 and lead it to its current state of dominance.
Zuckerberg’s only job has been at Facebook.
“Trial is important for greatness, and lousy Facebook upgrades don’t really count as that. I mean for Zuckerberg they may be a big deal, as they are for users, but they aren’t really trials. They are inconveniences and those aren’t the things that make greatness. What needs to happen is he needs a real trial, like getting fired, or getting cancer like Steve Jobs, that would provide him with real clarity and possibly propel him to greatness,” continued Kevins. “Personally I would recommend curable cancer, unlike Jobs. That may not be as dramatic or even as defining but at least it will allow him to live a lot longer than Jobs. Dying that young isn’t something that anyone, even Zuckerberg, should lust after. That was just kind of sad. Hopefully that doesn’t happen.”
Zuckerberg still has a number of years before he needs to get fired or contract cancer to match Jobs.
