MICROSOFT TO RISK BRINGING OUT ANOTHER NEW PRODUCT
October 24 2010
Redmond, WA – The history of corporate products has been filled with a great deal of success, but even in those successes there have been a handful of major failures. New Coke, Lisa, and the infamous Edsel are all examples of major products released

by big companies that have become disastrous flops for one reason or another. While all of those companies eventually rebounded from their failures, the legacy has left a stain on their collective reputation.
Virtually all major companies have experienced some degree of corporate embarrassment, perhaps the biggest of which in recent times was Microsoft and the doomed release of Windows Vista. Plagued by bugs and incompatibility issues the long awaited and much touted release became a nightmare for the company, one it worked quickly to end by releasing a successor a little over two years later. While the shame of Vista has started to fade recently, the experience has understandably made both Microsoft and customers hesitant about the release of another iteration of the product, something which CEO Steve Ballmer claims is imminent. While no release date has yet been set, it’s believed likely that the company has already begun work on the successor to that upcoming software so that the types of issues that plagued Vista users will not be repeated by users of the next version of the system.
“Everyone is a little nervous about Windows 8, especially the higher ups. We have a lot of cool things going into the software but there is always going to be risk with not only that kind of integration but also with consumer adoption. Steve isn’t wrong saying that it’s the riskiest product we have, it’s a huge risk for all kinds of reasons,” said a Microsoft insider. “That’s why we are doing a couple of builds down the road. If people don’t buy into Windows 8 we want to have something ready and waiting in the wings so that the kind of debacle that happened with Vista doesn’t happen again.”
Vista sold well but became the butt of many jokes due to the panoply of issues with the program, most of which were eventually patched.
“We got caught with our pants down. We released a shoddy product and we got
nailed for it but that won’t happen the next time we release something substandard. We want to make sure that we can respond to consumer complaints right away and release the next version before things spiral out of control,” continued the insider. “Windows 9 is already looking really good and I’m sure people won’t have the kind of problems with it that they will with the next version. Windows 10 though, well that’s a different story. Windows 11 though will be something special. I can’t wait until that gets out on the marketplace. That’s really going to be something that will drop people’s jaws and change things.”
The company has apparently begun preliminary work on Windows 12 which will likely fail.
“When you look at a company like Microsoft you associate it with money and success but they have had their fair share of failures outside of Vista. Windows ME, the smart watch, Bob, and Zune were all huge failures. It’s part of the business, you can’t always be right. Good companies though know when they’ve failed and fix things,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “Windows is the heart and soul of their business, it’s the platform on which everything else is based and that makes it essential that they get it right even if it takes and handful of tries. Without Windows so withers the company so it’s good to hear they are planning a little ways down the road.”
Zune 2, better known as Windows Phone 7, is apparently a dramatic step over the last iteration. The next version is already expected to fail.
