PAUL ALLEN SUES WASHINGTON MAN FOR WEARING THE SAME SHIRT
August 29 2010
Redmond, WA – U.S. history is replete with stories of incredible business success, from the Rockefellers to the Kennedys, the success of the United States as a nation has led to, and been prompted by, the success of her people. For the most part
those people have been true business men, men who saw opportunities and exploited them by consolidating them into corporations. However, that has not always been the case. Some businessmen have stumbled into success by innovating or creating an entirely new niche and driving those products to massive public appeal.
That was most certainly the case with Bill Gates and Paul Allen whose innovative products not only made them rich but also changed the world. Much of our modern world, from BlackBerry to Facebook, simply would not have been possible without the innovations that Microsoft made and which both Gates and Allen deserve full credit. Now heading into the third phase of their lives, the founders of the company have gone in wildly different directions. Gates has become the most famous philanthropist in the world with his Bill and Melinda Gates foundation while Allen has remained out of the spotlight and purchased sports teams. Allen though
hasn’t remained docile as evidenced by his recent lawsuit against virtually every big company in the world. Not satisfied with that success however, Allen has also filed a suit against a local Washington man who was spotted wearing the exact same dress shirt that Allen himself was wearing.
“This is the first we have heard of an issue with Mr. Allen. My client, Michael Inglis, received this particular shirt as a Father’s Day gift three years ago and had no way of knowing that Mr. Allen also possessed the same shirt. It is an unfortunate coincidence,” said lawyer Al Harper. “We believe this suit is totally without merit and the result of overly aggressive persecution. Mr. Inglis will fight these charges and will continue to wear the shirt his children gave him.”
Inglis is being sued for $12 million and a promise that the shirt will be turned over to Allen.
“It was a little shocking to see this first lawsuit come forth for all kinds of reasons. The biggest reason was that Allen simply doesn’t do a whole lot in the public eye at all and suing companies like Google, Facebook, Staples, Yahoo and all these other companies is about as in the public eye as one can get. It’s very odd,” said
Scrape TV Legal analyst Gabe Hawthorne. “I doubt that particular suit will go anywhere in the end. There may be settlements or something but it’s unlikely that anyone will win in the strictest meaning f the word. These are two entities with huge amounts of money and can stay in court for years if they so choose so a win could take a very long time. Its likely things will be settled in some amenable way.”
Other companies involved in the suit, which alleges patent infringement, are eBay, Apple, and Netflix.
“This other suit though is something else entirely. At first glance it seems almost silly but my guess is that they will argue that Allen is a distinctive personality in this small town and that any emulation, whether intentional or not, is an effort to exploit that personality for personal gain. The suit itself is a buffer against other who might want to imitate Allen,” continued Hawthorne. “The reality is Allen has a lot of money and he has the ability to outspend this guy who as I understand it is a real estate agent. He will bleed him dry and make him an example and no one will ever try to copy him again.”
Google co-founder Sergey Brin stated that he has never and will never wear a shirt like Allen.
