PRIVACY CRACKDOWN MAY STIFLE MARK ZUCKERBERG’S GRANDER AMBITIONS
November 2 2011
Menlo Park, CA – They knew it was coming, the privacy crackdown, as much as they wished it wasn’t. It came though and now Facebook is going to have to be a little more open in the ways in which they deal with their user’s privacy.
The company, which now boasts 800 million users, will be obligated to gain consent from users before altering their privacy settings or else face sanctions from the FTC. In the past, the company has played free and loose with such settings, hoping to expand access to their user’s private information, which in turn is used to provide advertising and, in theory, expand the openness of the platform. No more though, at least not without permission.
That new rule will no doubt come as a relief to the millions of users concerned over their privacy on the very public network, but will also undoubtedly come as a major strain to Zuckerberg and his future plans, whatever those might really be and wherever they might lead.
“Zuck is not happy, not one bit. He’s smart, obviously, and he realizes that they dug this hole for themselves. He wishes he could go back in time and change some of the way they did things but that isn’t going to happen, at least not yet. They are working on a Facebook time machine but it isn’t going well so far,” said a Facebook insider. “He really does feel that this gets in the way of expanding the company and that it could hurt future developments. That the platform is not much more limited and that that will hurt users much more than any privacy issues.”
The Facebook time machine has been rumoured for a few months now but is apparently nowhere near ready for primetime yet.
It’s not clear how the ruling will impact the company’s future IPO or Zuckerberg’s rumoured plans for a secret underwater base off the coast of California.
“It really is already having an impact and they are having to adjust plans pretty significantly to adapt to the new environment. I think Zuck will look at it diplomatically eventually, seeing it as just one of the many challenges that the hero has to go through, but for now he is really, really angry,” continued the insider. “He has been walking around in a huff, snapping at people and even once slammed a stapler down on his desk. The last thing we want o see is Zuck explode, that scares all of us.”
A massive laser project, the details of which have been scarce, has reportedly been shelved temporarily following the order. It’s not clear why the company needed personal information for lasers.
“We will still go forward, the company will still grow, but things are different now. It’s not just the privacy thing, it’s that we had total freedom previously and now we are being watched. Zuck doesn’t like his personal laundry out there in the public and this privacy thing has really done that,” continued the insider. “He’s wily, he’ll find a way around this, but for now it’s tough. It’s just one more obstacle but we will get past it and eventually maybe this will make us stronger. Challenge usually does.”
Zuckerberg has remained quiet, private, since the ruling.
