DOCTOR SUPRISINGLY PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO MOLESTING 100 PATIENTS
March 25 2010
Georgetown, DE – Since the beginning of medicine as a distinct profession, there has been a bond between them and their patients. Because of the nature of many medical conditions, that bond, a vow of secrecy between the two, has not only
become a standard, it has become the law in virtually every country in the world. That has also placed the profession as almost unimpeachable, like priests, doctors have a level of trust that few people ever gain. Because of that sanctity when that bond is broken, it is even more devastating than it would normally be.
Such a fissure is exactly the problem facing Delaware doctor Earl Bradley who is currently on trial for 471 counts of sexual assault. Rape and sexual exploitation of a child are just a few of those charges levied on behalf of more than one hundred patients, claiming assault ranging back to 1998. Those charges, levied against a
trusted and well-liked doctor, has devastated the town of Georgetown who are just starting to endure the trauma that has been thrust upon them. In a surprising move however, the doctor has pleaded not guilty to the charges, frustrating his accusers and likely drawing out the agony even longer.
“I cannot say certain things that I am feeling, and I am feeling a great deal. I am determined to see that this defendant will never, ever be in a position again to hurt another child. The thing that makes this case so troubling and horrific is the alleged abuse of trust in this matter. These are highly specialized cases where no one in the community could believe someone could do this to a child, to a child who is voiceless,” said Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden. “We will see this case through to the end and we will see justice for these young victims. This doctor will never again be in the position to harm a child but will instead spend the rest of his life in prison.”
Bradley faces life in prison if convicted.
“Anytime you have an incident like this it hurts the community as a whole much more than if he were a private citizen. People put their children into the hands of doctors every day and when they hear about incidents like this they are obviously going to have second thoughts ever doing so again. Obviously that is the case for Bradley who even if he is found not guilty will have trouble practicing again, but it affects all doctors,” said Scrape TV Medical analyst Dr. Phillip Waites. “What’s really most surprising about this is that he didn’t do the easiest thing for the people and just plead guilty. That would have made things much better for the victims, the community, and for the medical community at large. He took the selfish route, as many molesters are wont to do.”
Because of video and picture evidence it’s believed there is very little chance that Bradley will go free, no matter his plea.
“Pleading not guilty doesn’t necessarily mean that the person will go free but there is a better chance than there would be if he just sort of lay down on his sword and took what was coming for him. Obviously they are going to fight this, and who knows, they might win,” continued Waites. “No one will likely trust him with their children now, well for the most part. Obviously morons and people who molest their own children will be fine with him, but for everyone else, he might as well be dead. It’ll be interesting to see what happens if he does get out.”
Bradley had reportedly tried to continue his practice while in prison as a part of a plea bargin, but that proposal was rejected by prosecutors.
