Houston, TX – Homosexuality is perhaps one of the most mysterious of the great many mysteries of the human condition. In ancient times, such as Empirical Rome, same-sex relations were common, even the norm. As centuries passed though, and 
as the conservatism of the Victorian period started to take hold, Homosexuality started to become marginalized and eventually a source of great deal of prejudice. Medical science has more or less confirmed that homosexuality is a natural state, as much a part of human sexuality as the preference for blondes over brunettes, but that switch from acceptance to prejudice still confuses many, baffling attempts to fully understand that particular mystery of our species.
Whatever the roots of homosexuality and the prejudice that has formed around it, it is clear that people, both gay and straight, have made significant progress in recent years to erase the hatred that surrounds them. The election of Annise Parker to mayor of Houston is perhaps one of the greatest statements on the new nature of homosexuality and acceptance in modern American society. Parker, who is a lesbian, is the first homosexual mayor of one of the major cities of the south, Houston. Her election is being lauded by civil rights activists as a major step forward but the people that elected her are only thinking one thing: Fabulous.
“Tonight the voters of Houston have opened the doors to history. acknowledge that. I embrace that. I know what this win means to many of us who thought we could never achieve high office. I know what it means. I understand, because I feel it, too. But now, from this moment, let us join as one community. We are united in one goal in making this city the city that it can be, should be, might be, will be,” said Parker in her acceptance speech. “I learned about the problems and the needs and hopes of our city at the neighborhood level. I understand what needs to be done to move us forward. Don't let past disappointments, past anger, past frustrations guide us into the future. Let's unite and work together.”
Parker made her acceptance speech wearing a pantsuit and sensible shoes amidst multi-coloured streamers.
“It means a lot to the gay and lesbian people not only in Houston but throughout the country. That a major city in the deep south could put aside their prejudices and elect a person based on her merits rather than on her sexual orientation is an incredible statement on how far we have come. Someday soon we may even have a gay President,” said a spokesperson for the Gay & Lesbian Switchboard Houston. “It’s a totally fab thing to have her as the mayor. I can already see the mayor’s office being a kind of Mecca for gays and lesbians throughout Texas. Hopefully she will hire a man to decorate though, we just have better taste when it comes to those kinds of things.”
Parker reportedly plans on keeping her pickup truck after taking office and will bring her three cats into the Mayor’s office whenever possible.
“One has to wonder if this is truly an indication of a more tolerant American or a result of something else entirely. The voter turnout was only 16.5 % which indicates that large percentage of gay and lesbians will have shown up. Traditionally, at least in Texas, homosexual people are a little more aware of the world than regular Texans and are more likely to vote, which could have skewed the results,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “America is changing of course, but this might simply be a result of it being in Texas which traditionally has limited literacy skills even when it comes to marking an X. However it happened though it’s really strong step forward, even if it was done in Birkenstocks.”
Parker’s first move as mayor will be to prohibit all makeup and perfume on female employees at City Hall.
