NICKELBACK TOPS 9/11, SWINE FLU, IRAQ WAR AS WORST OF THE DECADE
December 31 2009
Washington, D.C. – It is perhaps fitting that 2009 was such an eventful and dramatic year. As the capper for the first decade of the 21st century, the events of 2009 continued the chaos that defined the years preceding it, making it undoubtedly

the only way the decade could have ended. With wars, economic chaos, terrorism, cultural upheaval, and endless controversies in every corner of the public realm, the 00’s will likely be examined and shunned in equal measure for many years to come.
Now an official study conducted by the Department of Health and Human services has decided on the best, the worst, and most important events of the first decade of the century. While some elements of the lists have already come into question, few are disputing the event that topped the list for the worst event of the decade. That event was the 2001 release of ‘Silver Side Up’, the breakthrough album from the Canadian band Nickleback. With over five million copies sold in the United States alone, the release of that album launched the band into the mainstream, making them into one of the most successful and ubiquitous recording artists of the decade.
“There was a lot of debate over this particular choice but in the end it really made the

most sense. What we had to look at was not only the immediate effects of the incident but the long term results. Granted, 9/11 spawned two wars and quite possibly helped to sink the world into a recession, but with millions of records sold all across the world the impact of Nickelback is far wider and much more pervasive than any terrorist actions,” said lead researcher Edward Cain. “Nickelback and their copycats are not only one of the worst musical trends of recent years, they are also one of the most socially detrimental developments of perhaps the last fifty years, maybe ever. While it’s unlikely that Nickelback will be considered as deeply as the rise of Christianity or the industrial revolution, they are one of the few truly negative advances that will have a lasting impact.”
Disco, often cited as the prime example of the demise of popular music, has gained a great deal of respect in recent years though it’s believed such a fate does not await Nickelback.
“It’s quite feat to top this list. I mean with all the profound and world-changing events of the decade, to be at the top of the list is quite incredible. I can’t imagine anyone outside the members of the band arguing with it though. I mean other people have ears as well,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Dylan Chambers. “It will be interesting to see how they fare in the next decade but judging by the sales of their latest album, thankfully it appears as though they won’t have nearly the same effect that they had in the last. I doubt we’ll ever be totally free of them but at least we will be start making new memories.”
It’s not believed that many fans will protest the placement as very few have ever been found in the wild.
“I’m sure that we will soon have a potent irritant in the music world though it’s unlikely that they will have the same kind of impact that Nickelback has had. Declining music sales and an industry that is really on the edge of non-existence means that few acts like this will make it through the system as actual music fans will be the ones to make them popular rather than the labels,” continued Chambers. “Some will sneak through but their impact will be muted meaning that this list ten years from now will likely be topped by something like the war between Israel and Iran or the economic collapse of Japan, things that by rights should be at the top of the list.”
The band’s latest album, ‘Dark Horse’ was released last year to high sales but no hit singles, sparing mainstream audiences.
