RECESSION KILLS NEW YORK MURDER RATE

December 30 2009

New York, NY –  Whether fairly or unfairly New York City has long been considered a hive of crime and other malevolent forces. Much of that reputation in the modern days is based on the problems that occurred through the 1960’s and 70’s in the Bronx, harlem tamar jacoby
Brooklyn, and Harlem but the violent energy that helped forge the city is much older than that with immigrants from Italy, Ireland, and the Netherlands comong to New York with the hope of establishing a new life but often met with violence and prejudice instead. It was from that violence that the city was born and, ultimately, beholden to.

Much of that reputation has changed in recent years due in large parts to serious efforts to clean up troubled areas, a growing affluence throughout the city, and decline of other major city centres such as Detroit, Cleveland, and Atlanta which have taken up the crown as boss tweed
leading bastions of crime. Many though have expressed fears that that switch has robbed the city of its fundamental nature, of the engine that drove the city to one of the greatest in world the world. For those critics the worst possible outcome has happened with 2009 seeing the city recording its lowest murder rate in history.

“We are on track for a record setting year with only 461 murders to date. The previous best was 496 only two years ago. These are the best numbers we have seen since record keeping began in 1963 and is dramatically down from the high of over 2200 in 1990,” said a police department spokesperson. “We feel the numbers can go even lower if we can reduce the number of illegal gun flowing into the city and continue our community work. We can actually envision a day when we start to see a negative flow of murders, something we are definitely shooting for.”

It’s not clear if the city is looking to simply export murders to other cities or if they are developing some kind of technology to bring past murder victims back to life. Others though aren’t as happy with the new numbers, particularly professional murderers who are finding it harder and harder to hide their crimes.dutch schultz

“A couple of years ago the problem was kinda the same, just the opposite. There’s no place to put bodies anymore but back then it was because every place was jammed, now it’s because every place is clean and patrolled by the police. It’s really making the job a whole lot harder and is going to push a lot of people to just move outta the city completely,” said one contract killer who preferred not to be named. “There were entire weeks last year where there wasn’t a murder at all! It’s ridiculous. When I grew up half the people you knew were going to end up dead, that’s just the way it was and now people are living forever. That’s going to make it tough for us old guys but also for the next generation who won’t even know how to kill anyone.”

It’s not clear what the city is planning on doing with all the extra people, many of which who will live to breed creating a larger burden on the city in the future.michael corleone al pacino

“Nature has tornadoes and hurricanes and plagues exactly to deal with this kind of thing. Nature knows the advantages of culling the herd and keeping populations under control but now in New York they seem to have totally gone against the flow and potentially done something dangerous for the long term health of the city and the people who have to live in it,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “It’s a dangerous game they are playing and could ultimately come back and bite them but it’s the thing to do. Hopefully future generations won’t suffer too badly because of the poor choices we are making now.”

Murder rates in neighbouring Newark, New Jersey have been on the increase but experts believe that has no correlation to the situation in New York but is rather a result of them living in New Jersey.
