ROGUE PLANE ATTACKS AND KILLS JOGGER ON SOUTH CAROLINA BEACH

March 16 2010

Hilton Head Islands, S.C. – Despite our utter dominance of the planet there are still areas that remain wild and untamed and a major danger. The wilds of Africa, the jungles of South America, and the frozen wastelands of Siberia are just a few the kraken
examples of the very treacherous lands that still vex human beings. While we may someday eventually conquer those lands, either through sheer determination or necessity, there is one part of the world that likely will remain forever dangerous, the oceans.

Filled with animal and weather danger, the grand oceans of the planet Earth have always been a compelling and dangerous proposition. The source of much of expansion across the planet, the oceans have also claimed the lives of thousands, perhaps millions. With sharks, typhoons, hurricanes, and tidal waves just a few of many dangers the ocean possesses, those threats are unlikely to ever be conquered. That too is part of the reason the sea is so compelling. The sheer danger and challenge that they pose has drawn more than a few, some to glory, and some to their demise. Now a new threat has emerged from the mighty oceans of the world, this one a man-made threat that could seriously endanger the lives of many more should it become a new trend.small plane crash

“I can confirm that 38-year old Robert Gary Jones was killed late Monday while walking along an area beach. Jones was killed by a small plane which crashed after apparently encountering mechanical problems. Two people were on board the plane and both were largely uninjured,” said Beaufort Country Coroner Ed Allen. “The entire incident is still under investigation and will remain so for the next little while. As you can imagine this is a fairly unique situation and it will take a great deal of time before we are able to uncover and release all the details. It does appear that the plane had lost a propeller and the windshield was covered in oil, obscuring the pilot’s vision.”

This is the first such incident in South Carolina, but already citizens are concerned that it might not be the last.small plane

“It’s really scary. I walk along that beach quite frequently myself, usually with my daughter. If we had gone out that night at the right time it could have been us that ended up dead. It’s really scary and I hope they do something to make sure that it doesn’t happen again,” said Katrina Hedgecomb, a local resident. “You see planes flying over that area all the time and I can’t tell you how many times I looked up and though that it was possible that one of them could fall and crash into somebody and now it’s happened. I can tell you I won’t be walking on that beach again anytime soon, not until they do something about all the planes.”

Propellers are designed to stay affixed to aircraft both during and after flight, indicating that this incident might have been nothing more than a tragic accident, something that is giving little pause to critics.small plane

“For years the city has allowed planes to fly above the city and above the beaches knowing that something like this might happen and now it has. Their inaction has left two children without a father and a community almost paralyzed by fear. They will have to act now, it’s a shame that it took a tragedy to make this happen,” said local rabble-rouser Martha Kemple. “Big metal coffins are not mean to fly. Birds are designed to fly. There is a reason human beings were not given wings. And now this happens, I hope the town fathers will be able to live with themselves.”

No other similar incidents have been reported in the last year, but reportedly President Obama himself has tasked his officials to keep an eye on the nation’s beaches.
