TASTY WAVES EXPECTED IN HAWAII AFTER MASSIVE QUAKE IN CHILE

February 27 2010

Honolulu, HI – There are certain areas of the world that are prone to disaster. Tornado Alley in the United States, Earthquakes in Japan, and hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico are just a few examples of places where disaster is expected. That doesn’t deep impact movie
mean that the people who live in those areas are used to such events even if they are, in many ways, better equipped to handle the trauma that such incidents leave behind. While occasionally disasters are so devastating that even those hardy spirits are put to the test, the strength of the human spirit often perseveres.

Such a trauma is now facing the people of Chile and virtually every nation bordering the Pacific after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the country, levelling buildings, killing hundreds, and setting of the serious risk of Tsunami’s through the Pacific. The quake, 300 times more powerful than the one that struck Haiti in January, was one of the most powerful ever recorded which shook buildings up to 200 kilometres away. Though far less powerful than the quake that prompted the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004, the tidal wave
danger is still omnipresent. Those potentially afflicted however are remaining calm and in the best spirit of enduring and dealing the hand that is dealt to them, are already breaking out the surfboards, getting ready for some killer waves.

“Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property. Residents are awake and fully aware of what’s happening. Right now we are primarily concerned with residents who live on the coast and in the evacuation zone. They should leave the shoreline, pack some things in the car and drive inland. If you’re not in the zone, stay inland,” said John Cummings, spokesperson for the Honolulu Department of the Emergency Management.  “That of course doesn’t really apply to surfers. The waves haven’t been great the last little while but this should change all that. We are still advising people to be cautious, but any surfer worth his salt would be crazy to miss out on an opportunity like this.”

The Tsunami wave hit French Polynesia earlier in the day, creating killer breaks all along the coastline.surfing

“These kinds of waves are really once in a lifetime opportunities. These kinds of quakes are so rare, and they so infrequently send waves like this to an American state so it would make a lot of sense to see people flocking to coast to await the arrival. There’s a good chance that it will have dissipated significantly by the time it reaches the coast, but still it will the best they’ve had in quite awhile,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “The really sad thing about this is that the people of Chile won’t be able to experience the waves. Obviously they are going to be preoccupied digging through the ruins of their houses and burying their dead, but even that wouldn’t stop a serious surfer. It’s really sad that they won’t see these waves.”jeff spicoli

Chile has long had a history of Earthquakes, and of missing out on the major waves they have created.

“Chile has a long and rich surfing culture but they have always been on the outside looking in when it comes to things like this, which is really sad. It is good news for other places however and I’m sure the people in Hawaii are going to really love this quake,” continued Lim. “These are the kinds of waves that people literally only see once in a lifetime and you really need to be in the right place at the right time in order to catch them. There are going to be a lot of happy surfers across the Pacific, I can tell you.”

An earthquake in Japan yesterday caused minor damage and no major waves.
