U.S. CONSIDERS UNDERWEAR BAN AFTER BOMBING ATTEMPT
January 4 2010
Washington, D.C. –Ever since the attack on the World Trade Center the debate between security and liberty has been at the top of everyone’s minds with security winning out more often than not. Motions like the Patriot Act, increased checks at
airports and border crossing, and the monitoring of telephone and web communications have all been readily accepted in the face of the ever present threat of terrorist attacks. Now the government is faced with a new dilemma in the wake of the attempted airplane bombing on Christmas Day, a dilemma that might put the government in their toughest battle yet.
As new information about the nature of the bombing and the likelihood that government officials may have known in advance that terrorists might use underwear as a weapon, one of the most intimate of garments is now under closer inspection. While initially officials believed
that the underwear bomb might have been an anomaly but new revelations from Saudi Intelligence officials indicate that such a technique was attempted earlier in the year in a failed attempt to assassinate the Saudi Prince, indicating that undergarments have now become a dangerous new tool in the Al Qaeda arsenal, calling into question the continued use of underwear throughout the country.
“Privacy advocates have long debated the schism between personal liberty and the need to protect the lives of innocent people and that is something that is likely to only become more vocal in the coming days and weeks. What is clear is that Al Qaeda has opened up a whole new avenue for exploitation and the U.S. and other countries are going to be forced to react,” said Scrape TV Terrorism analyst Doug Davids. “People have enjoyed underwear for centuries now but all that might be under peril in this new reality. I can’t imagine that security officials will be big fans of undergarments of any kind after this incident and are going to fighting to keep them off planes.”
Already the Obama administration is considering legislation that would require people to turn all their undergarments over before boarding a plane though action on that likely won’t happen until well into the New Year.
“The question will of course be whether this affects all types of undergarments. Boxers or briefs? Bras? They all have to come into question in the new reality. People have taken undergarments as almost a right in today’s world but that is going to have to change if the people really want to be protected,” continued Davids.” I don’t envy the people who will have to be doing the collection, particularly with overweight passengers, but they too will have to make the sacrifices. Ultimately as long as the terrorists have access to underwear this is going to be a major threat and the country is going to have to deal with the new reality.”
Also at issue are major underwear manufacturers such as Hanes and Jockey which have been selling underwear throughout the Middle East and in the developing world for a number of years. Many are concerned that such double dealing might compromise the country’s security.
“We have never and will never marketed any of our products for any other purpose other than their intended use. All of our products are intended to provide support and protection and should not be used for carrying explosives, detonators, timers, or any other such devices,” said a Hanes spokesperson. “We will be working with the federal government in whatever ways are needed to ensure that our products are not being used illegitimately or for illicit purposes of any kind.”
Jockey and Fruit of the Loom have reportedly already offered to work with the federal government on new designs that would provide more security and comfort.
