35 YEARS LATER FISHERMEN FINALLY CATCH KILLER SHARK OFF EAST COAST
July 1 2010
Gloucester, MA – Dun-Dun. Dun-Dun. Dun-Dun Dun-Dun Dun-Dun Dun-Dun Dun-Dun Dun-Dun. In the summer of 1975 that sound was the sound of fear. For an entire generation that sound kept people out of the water, safe and sound on the
beach. That year saw the release of the seminal aquatic haunted house ‘Jaws’, a film that helped establish the movie blockbuster, director Steven Spielberg, and the oceans as a dangerous and treacherous place with danger and death lurking around every corner.
By the end of the film many movie goers went away shocked and startled but relieved at the conclusion which saw the destruction of the monster shark that caused so much damage. Of course three years later the arrival of ‘Jaws 2’ threw that happy ending into disarray. With two more sequels the confidence of the public quickly evaporated as the ominous realization that those happy ending were merely tacked on to a horrifying record of aquatic carnage and mayhem. Though every shark died at the conclusion, the cornucopia of sequels served to undermine the public’s confidence in the veracity of those conclusions, leading many to believe that a killer shark may still be stalking the region. Now with reports that fishermen snagged a massive great white off the coast of Massachusetts on Tuesday many people’s worst fears have been realized as the ominous threat of the killer shark returns all these years later.
“Something kind of crested up out of the water ... and we pretty quickly realized it wasn't a tuna. It was a shark, seeing the dorsal fin and the tail. The shark went for some live mackerel bait, the crew went into ‘fish-fighting mode’”, said Bruce Sweet, captain of the Sweet Dream III. “There were high fives all around. We tagged the shark and then let it go and as we were doing that we suddenly realized our mistake. We forgot how close we were to the area where that Jaws shark had been and we realized that this might be the same shark, or at least one related to it. You have no idea how bad we feel having let that killer go.”
The Mayor of the town of Gloucester stated that he did not believe the shark would pose a long term danger and that visitors should feel safe coming to the area.
“We don’t want people rushing into something serious here. This is a summer town
and frankly we need summer dollars. You have to appreciate the gut reaction people have to these things. It’s all psychological. We all agree that we don’t need a panic this close to the 4th of July,” said Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “We are open for business and this going to be our best summer in years. My children play on these beaches, I can assure that they are safe and we are taking every precaution necessary to protect the public.”
Rumours of a bounty levied on the shark have brought dozens of fishermen to the area though the town has not said anything officially about a potential reward.
“I was a little too young to see the movie in the theatres but I did see it when I was a kid and it scared me but also excited me. As an adult I’ve been able to fully appreciate the film, all the nuances and subtlety and how truly scary and tense it must have been for the people in the theatres,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Frankly I had no idea that it was documentary. It had thought the entire thing was fiction not just the end but I guess that’s due to the skill of the filmmakers. Having real actors in those scenes really helped with that as well. Movies just aren’t what they used to be anymore.”
There have been no reports of any deaths associated with the sharks, yet.
