BUDGET CRISIS MAY FORCE SHUT DOWN OF NEW YORK CITY
June 10 2010
Albany, NY – There are only a handful of cities in the world that truly capture the world’s imagination. London, Tokyo, Rio, Madrid, Paris and maybe a handful of others can be considered global cities. At the top of that heap is of course New York City.
Almost from the start New York was the place to be in the Americas. The central port for virtually all comers to the New World, New York has been more than just a waypoint for visitors, it has almost become a nation unto itself and the source of dreams for millions.
Because of that affection for the city it perhaps comes as a bit of surprise that the Governor of New York state announced that without a serious resolution in short order that the entire state, and along with it the city, may be shut down. While budget crisis’ have threatened to shut down major facilities throughout the state before this is the first time an entire state has faced such an possibility. While the majority of the state itself has relatively little importance to the outside world, truth be told most people don’t even realize that New York is a state, the shutdown of the city so nice they named it twice has many concerned about impending travel planes.
“No one knows the full ramifications of a government shutdown. It would create unimaginable chaos around the state and the greater metropolitan areas. We would close all state parks, motor vehicles offices, courts, and even the lottery. Public assistance payments would not be made and unemployment payments might also be held up,” Governor David Paterson told WCBS. “We’ve been negotiating this budget deal for more than three months now and for various reasons have not been able to come to a solution. Shutting down the state is the last option anyone wants to consider and those people causing trouble in the negotiations need to keep the welfare of the people of the state in mind and put politics aside.”
It’s believed that all flights would be cancelled and state border crossing closed. All people currently in the state would be obligated to stay.
“I really can’t see them kicking out all the people currently in the state because the costs would be prohibitive which would defeat the whole purpose behind doing this. At least that will likely be true in the short term but if this crisis goes on for too long I’m sure they will have to consider permanent closures of certain areas of the state,” said Scrape TV American analyst Dave Davidson. “I mean most of the state is useless really. Albany is the only thing of any importance upstate and they will be shut down so not much will have been lost. NYC is a different story though and I think many people will consider it a great loss of the city is just out and out abandoned. However if that’s the way things are going then that’s the way they are going.”
It’s likely the valuables in the city would be sold off or archived in museums. The buildings would likely be allowed to simply fall back into the earth.
“This of course would not be the first time that a major city was abandoned by its people. We think of these things as odd in our modern world but look at a city like Machu Picchu. Cities and even nations have been abandoned throughout history so ditching New York would be nothing new. There’s a lot of people there though and they would likely cause trouble,” continued Davidson. “Of course New Yorkers argue about everything. They could present them with a thousand good reasons for shutting the place down and they would still argue. That’s just New York, or at least it was.”
The Statue of Liberty, it is believed, would likely just be sunk by explosives.
