CIA DIRECTOR ADMITS AFGHAN WAR GOING A LITTLE SLOWLY
June 29 2010
Washington, D.C. – Afghanistan has long been a nation of conflict. Centuries of intermittent conflict has earned the country, quite rightly, the reputation of a nation never at peace. Even in her quieter times the country is often embroiled in internal
turmoil which often times leads to the kind of warfare for which the country is known. Few nations, few areas of the world, have been subject to that kind of persistent conflict which has made set the country generations behind even most underdeveloped nations.
Though the country can claim many tacit victories in those conflicts, the people of the nation have never been able to celebrate those successes, at least not in the same spirit of other victors. For the people of Afghanistan one conflict simply leads into another, something the United States and her allies have been attempting to change since the war began there almost a decade ago. Now the longest war in the history of the country, the United States has continued to fight a pitched battle for the hearts and minds of Afghanistan and have found as much difficulty as everyone else who has stepped foot into the country. Now top officials are finally admitting as much with even the director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, admitting that the war is going a little more slowly than they would like.
“It's harder, it's slower than I think anyone anticipated. Winning in Afghanistan is having a country that is stable enough to ensure that there is no safe haven for al Qaeda or for a militant Taliban that welcomes al Qaeda,” Panetta told ABC. “We have seen no evidence that they are truly interested in reconciliation, where they would surrender their arms, where they would denounce al Qaeda, where they would really try to become part of that society. The war has serious problems but progress is being made.”
Washington officials have often been reticent to acknowledge that the war hasn’t gone exactly as planned but recent high profile incidents have apparently created a more honest environment.
“One would think that after this long stint in the country that things would have been
going swimmingly. This is the longest war in U.S. history which is really remarkable considering this idea that things aren’t going so well. The U.S. has this history of getting out when things get rough so sticking it out here where things are apparently not going all that well. You would think that they had just kind of settled in but apparently that isn’t the case,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “I mean it’s good that they are keeping track of things and it’s good that they are willing to stick it out for a little longer even in the face of problems they are having, whatever those might be. That is very much not in the American tradition but perhaps that is starting to change.”
U.S. officials had planned to starting withdrawing troops sometime next year but recently announced that those plans may have to wait.
“The other interesting news is that the director of the CIA knows what’s going on. That’s been very rare these days particularly when it deals with issues occurring in foreign lands. There was a time when the CIA was the whole deal but that hasn’t been the case for a long time. It’s good to see them back,” continued Martinez. “Of course that might change with this little chat. I don’t imagine that the administration will be too happy with having their dirty laundry out there for everyone to see considering what a positive spin they’ve been giving the whole war thing of late.”
Panetta abruptly cancelled interviews with both CNN and NBC after the ABC chat.
