CHARLES MANSON IN TROUBLE AGAIN AFTER BREAKING PRISON CELL PHONE RULE
December 5 2010
Corcoran, California – With all technology inevitably culture changes. Everyone has heard elders telling stories of long walks in the snow or how something didn’t exist when they were young and while those tales are usually dismissed as the ramblings of
old fogies, they do in many ways speak to an interesting cultural phenomenon. Those tales map out the progression of culture and the ways in which society is changed by the devices which it creates, a fluid process that is continually pushing human beings to ever greater heights.
Some of those changes are of course profound, new medicines or machines like airplanes, which fundamentally alter the way in which humanity works as a species. Other advances are far more subtle than that, changes that shift cultural mores or habits of behaviour that in the long term cause deep changes in the interactions between human beings. Perhaps one of the most profound examples of such a technology is the rise of the cell phone, a device once held by very few but is now ubiquitous and connects billions of people around the world. Both poor and wealthy use cell phones now, connecting people in meaningful ways, but they have not been docile changes. Cell phones have become truly disruptive technologies, in both philosophical and literal ways, something legendary killer Charles Manson found out the hard way after falling afoul of his prison’s strict cell phone rules.
“During a routine search a cell phone was discovered under the mattress of Charles Manson. It appears that he sent calls and texts to a number of people in California, New Jersey, Florida, and British Columbia before our officers discovered the phone,” said Terry Thornton, spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections. “It's troubling that he had a cell phone since he's a person who got other people to murder on his behalf though we don’t know if that is what he was attempting to do in this case. Nonetheless, we have removed the phone in accordance with prison policies.”
The phone in question was an LG Flip. LG officials had no comment.
“Cell phones have become as ubiquitous in prisons across the United States as they have become in ordinary life. They are easy to smuggle in and are sought after for a variety of reasons including coordinating deals with other prisoners and communicating with the outside world,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “They are as useful a tool to criminals as they are to ordinary folks and thus are highly coveted by all levels of criminal, even insane cult leaders and mass murderers. One might assume that because Manson is elderly and totally off his rocker that things like cell phones would be totally foreign. However as we have seen across all aspects of society this technology reaches people regardless of age and murderous intent.”
Manson is next up for parole in 2012 and it is not clear if this violation will damage his chances.
“There is a law that bans cell phones from all federal institutions but Corcoran is a state facility and is subject to a different set of rules. They do have some restrictions regarding the possession and use of cell phones by prisoners and it appears that Manson fell afoul of them,” continued Weston. “Whether it was leaving it on ring during inspection or doing something funny with the vibrate feature we may never know but one thing is clear; Manson just can’t stay out of trouble. I would have to say at this rate he is never going to get parole.”
We attempted to contact Manson for comment but his phone went right to message.
