EGG RECALL WIDENS ON REPORTS OF AL QAEDA CHICKEN FARMS
August 21 2010
Washington, D.C. – In a new series of recalls federal investigators pulled an additional 170 million eggs from stores shelves in the United States out of fears of salmonella contamination. This current recall is in addition to the already recalled 380
million eggs pulled earlier in the week, bringing the total to more than half a billion eggs. Thus far, all the contaminated eggs have been tied to two farms in Iowa, Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg, but investigators are currently investigating other farms in the area for similar contamination.
Already one of the largest egg recalls in history, investigators admit that the scale of the contamination could be much wider than first believed and that many of the contaminated eggs may already have been consumed. Running concurrently with the recall is an investigation into the farms, the health procedures in place, the health of the chickens producing the eggs, and any connection to criminal organizations amongst staff or management of the facilities. Members of the FDA, FBI and DHS have already descended on the farms and begun questioning staff in effort to not only stop any further spread of contaminated eggs but also uncover any potential for further issues.
“We have begun an in depth investigation into the nature of the contamination and
any extended circumstances that might have led to these issues. At this time we are focussing on employees and their families though we cannot detail the nature of those investigations. We do not believe that the chickens themselves have played a direct role in the contamination of these foodstuffs,” said a spokesperson for the FDA. “Americans consume 220 million eggs every day and Iowa is the primary producer of those eggs which makes farms in this area a prime target for exploitation by interested parties. We are conducting our investigation in coordination with other federal agencies and we will take all action appropriate to protect the health of the American people.”
Owners of both facilities have reportedly been called into to speak with investigators.
“More than likely, probably, this is a situation where poor health and safety standards have created an issue but in this day and age you can’t simply accept what might be
the case. The reality of terrorism is real and this is exactly the kind of thing that they would do. They infect people’s homes, they infect their breakfast. There is no more intimate violation than that and no better way to create terror in the populace,” said Scrape TV Terrorism analyst Doug Davids. “While they have not, as yet, made an attack on foodstuffs it would not be out of the realm of possibility for an organization like Al Qaeda. Salmonella is easy to get a hold of and we know they have agents working in the country. In fact that actually makes a lot of sense and this is more than a possibility, it’s likely a reality. I don’t want to jump to conclusions but this seems likely.”
Al Qaeda has widely been rumoured to have a series of chicken farms in northern Pakistan, where bin Laden is believed to be holding up.
“Frankly the chickens are likely innocent victims in all of this. I find it very unlikely that they would have the ability to collaborate on something so complex as international terrorism but complicit or not they are at the epicentre of the issue and need to be dealt with in a sever and effective manner,” continued Davids.” This is not only about protecting the lives and well being or Americans, this is another battle in the fight against terrorism. This needs to be fought aggressively so that future terrorists don’t see this a weakness to exploit.”
Protestors in Nebraska have destroyed two supermarkets carrying the contaminated eggs. They also burnt down the one library in state stating that they won’t allow terrorists to read American books.
