NEW HAMPSHIRE SUFFERING WIDESPREAD BEACH CLOSURES IN WAKE OF HURRICANE EARL
September 5 2010
Concord, NH - Hurricane Earl, as it turns out, was more of a whimper than a roar as it made its way up the eastern seaboard of the United States. Downgrading from Hurricane status to Tropical Storm, the system skirted the states that had been

prepared for a full out assault from the once monster storm. Now shop and home owners are finally starting to return to normal, removing plywood from windows and going back to regular business.
Unfortunately though, not everyone has been unaffected by the Hurricane. Beachgoers across the state of New Hampshire have been faced with closed beaches in the wake of the storm on this, the last long weekend of the summer. That has led to a great deal of protest and discourse throughout the state particularly as other New England states decided to leave their beaches open. While it is expected that most beaches will be open again on Sunday, that is small comfort for many vacationers who by that time will already be making their way back home in preparation for the start of school. The storm of protest also comes at a time when Governor John Lynch, who pushed for the closures, is facing his biggest political threat yet only weeks before voters go to the polls.
“They don't like it but everyone decided its best not to fool around to ensure public
safety. Everyone decided its best not to fool around to ensure public safety. The situation will be reviewed again and we will make assessments on a day-to-day basis,” said Wallis Sands State Park Manager Ken Loughlin after a conference call with the Governor. “We were fortunate that most of the storm occurred during low tide at night time. But people were disappointed that they couldn't see the waves crashing on the rocks. Those that haven't experienced something like that were really bummed. We do though have a responsibility first and foremost to public safety.”
The Governor was reportedly under a great deal of pressure from Democratic leadership to reopen the beaches but stood his ground, apparently hoping that most of the disgruntled vacationers were from out of state.
“We came here to go to the beach, that was the whole point of the trip. We saved and we waited all this time and the kids were so excited but when we got here all the beaches were closed. This is really unacceptable. Our kids waited the entire summer and only came here to be disappointed and for no reason at all,” said Mary Albert from Philadelphia. “Now my kids will have to go to school with their biggest memory of the summer being sitting in a delightful bed and breakfast. That is not the summer I wanted my children to have and it is totally ridiculous that the governor would allow this kind of thing to occur. I almost want to move to the state so that I can vote him out.”
It’s believed that less than 10 percent of disappointed visitors are from New Hampshire.
“This was certainly a risky play for the Governor and it will have an impact, not just on
angry beach goers but also with businesses that rely on beach traffic, but it could pay off. If he is perceived as acting in the best interest of the safety of the people then he will have scored some major points come election time,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “That doesn’t remove the human factor however and that could have a lasting impact. Young children will remember this day and pass it down to their children meaning a whole lot fewer votes for the Democrats in the future. I’m sure this day will scar generations of young Americans in deep and profound ways.”
The Governor Lynch reportedly had a brief conversation with President Obama after the decision. Obama apparently supported the closure.
