POLICE INVESTIGATING WIDESPREAD OYSTER DEATHS ON LOUISIANA COAST
July 31 2010
Venice, LA – As if the people of Louisiana didn’t have enough to worry about already. Still recovering from the devastation that Hurricane Katrina over the state in 2005 the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico further compounded their pain and suffering. While such

trauma may pale in comparison to other places, say their Gulf neighbour Haiti, the suffering for individuals is just as profound no matter where they live. Whether it’s financial dislocation or the sheer oppressive nature of one disaster being piled on top of another, the people of Louisiana have been through enough.
Now in the midst of that comes word that police are investigating a mysterious series of deaths along the coastal reef of Louisiana. This trauma and mystery, affecting hundreds if not thousands, is not being visited upon the human population of the state but rather on the mollusc neighbours inhabiting the area. Investigators are reporting record numbers of dead oysters throughout the region believed to be in some way related to the oil spill. While it’s not yet clear who is directly responsible for the deaths, including the very real possibility that it may be the result of a series of mass suicides, the one thing that is sure is this is the last thing the state of Louisiana needed.
“What I saw does not look good. There is no evidence of oil in the reefs east of the Mississippi River but they do look to be fallow reef. These are all disturbing signs and we expect to find more and more dead as we continue to investigate the area. It’s sad but true,” said a spokesperson for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. “We have seen such things before but never in these numbers. We can only speculate as to the cause but we do believe that it is in some way related to the oil spill and the issues related to that.”
Early indications point the finger at fresh water being pumped through the reef to wash out oil but others are pointing to the massive depression overtaking all residents of the state in the face of repeated challenges.
“Trauma has a strange effect on the mind. While each individual situation may not be profound or affecting unto itself when multiple events are chained together they can work together to create profound changes in the brain. Oysters are obviously not human beings but their biochemistry can work in the same way,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “All living creatures on the planet share the same basic DNA structure and that means that something that can affect one creature could very easily do the same with another even if there is a difference in their levels of sophistication. We see whales beaching themselves for example. There is other evidence of suicide in the animal kingdom and that is exactly what we could be seeing here.”
Exact numbers of dead have not yet been determined but according to experts it’s believed to be ‘a lot’.
“The only thing getting in the way of that theory is the fact that oysters don’t have free will or a comprehension of their mortality. They likely don’t know that they are alive and thus cannot comprehend the possibility of death, meaning the process of suicide would have no motivation and thus would likely never be undertaken,” continued Welp. “The other problem is that oysters have very little ability to move and have no hands so the actual act of suicide would be challenging. Nonetheless, these kinds of recurring trauma could bring such feelings. Frankly, I would almost rather that than the alternative.”
State officials have ruled out any possibility of cult activity amongst the oyster population.
