POTHEAD CONSORTIUM DOESN’T SHOW UP TO VOTE IN PROPOSITION 19
November 4 2010
San Francisco, CA – Advocates for the legalization of marijuana have often argued that because it is such an old practice, used for hundreds of years, it only makes sense to legalize though of course few would make the same argument for murder or
rape, which have been around much longer. Another argument is that it is simply a weed, how can a weed be dangerous? Plants such as Aconitum (monkshood), Adenium obesum, and Black nightshade, are all toxic plants whose effects range from paralysis to death, meaning not all goods from God’s green Earth are docile.
While attitudes towards Marijuana have certainly calmed in recent years, the bulk of the world is still reticent to legalize the drug, partly a product of potential political fallout and partly a genuine moral and ethical objection to the legalization. Advocates have made headway in a number of areas and had hoped that the controversial Proposition 19 which would have legalized the sale and distribution of weed throughout California would have marked a dramatic change in attitudes. That however did not come to pass after the bill went up in smoke, leaving advocates with an empty hand and a need for a new plan, once they finally realize that the proposition was unsuccessful.
“California's Proposition 19 may not have won a majority of votes yesterday, but it
already represents an extraordinary victory for the broader movement to legalize marijuana. Its mere presence on the ballot, combined with a well run campaign, transformed public dialogue about marijuana and marijuana policy,” Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance said in a prepared statement. “This is not the end of the war, merely another battle, a challenge we have lost and that must give us the resolve to move onwards and upwards. This defeat does not mean that we will concede, it in fact strengthens our resolve and determination to bring drug freedom to the country.”
Nadelmann appeared to have had a rough night and read the statement through bleary and reddened eyes. He was alone at the press conference.
“Hey man, I can’t say one way or the other. I’m perfectly okay with things the way
they are. I don’t have any problems getting stuff so I’m like totally okay. I heard about that whole thing but I just figured, I mean I don’t know. I didn’t vote man, I was like totally baked and the last thing I should have been doing was going outside. Never smoke and vote right,” said Sam, a local pothead. “I think stuff should be like legal and all but I can’t go out voting for stuff all the time. I mean I voted like a few months ago didn’t I, like for the President. I don’t have a car so I have to take the bus everywhere and it’s just a pain. If they gave out free samples or even cookies at the voting place then I would have been down.”
The proposition earned 44 percent of the popular vote, which is just a little below the majority needed to have the law passed.
“The real question with Prop 19 was whether or not it could have been utilized in any meaningful way. Marijuana is still illegal on a federal level and the Attorney General stated that they would continue to prosecute violators regardless of the state law, and so it would have been a hollow victory. On the books but useless in practice,” said Scrape TV Legal analyst Gabe Hawthorne. “Unfortunately any such proposal is always going to be mired in this realm. Anyone in a position to actually advocate legalization with any kind of potency would of course be largely uninterested in doing so, and those most passionate about the cause are generally sitting on their couch with a bag of Fritos. That puts the whole legal situation in a sticky and kind of useless position. Hope someone tells those guys to go out and vote next time.”
Federal election rules prohibit enticement for votes, which would include Cheetos, cupcakes, and any other confectionary.
