CONTROVERSY ERUPTS OVER TEACHER'S REFUSAL TO HANG STUDENT’S CRUMMY FLAG DRAWING

May 15 2011

Orange, MA – There is perhaps no country in the world ad actively patriotic as the United States. While it’s certainly true that the majority of people feel a great deal of loyalty to their country, few express it as proactive and aggressive ways as the people american flag bald eagle
of the United States. In times of crisis or in conversations with people from other countries, national pride certainly does arise, but for the people of the United States patriotism seems as important as breathing and eating.

The root cause of that aggressive patriotic verve is not exactly clear. While it is true that the country was built on rebellion and identity, that was a very long time ago, many generations removed from the current reality. It could also be that such actions are simply cultural artifacts which have been passed down from parent to child for decades. Regardless of the reasons, there is no dispute that the flag waving patriotic energy that possesses so many people is an intrinsic part of the American identity. That patriotism is of course not isolated to the beer-drinking barbeque fiends of the Midwest, but something which overtakes all Americans, young and old, regardless of their sophistication or their understanding of what it really means. Not all patriotic efforts are, however, made the same, something an eleven-year old found out the hard way last week.

“He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no.  He could take the picture that he drew and take it home american patriot
and be proud of it there,” said John Girard, father of the student. “We’re allowing him to display his civil rights and be proud of who he is, but we’re denying Franklin those same rights. I’ve already contacted the American Civil Liberties union about this.”

According to school officials the drawing of the American flag because he was supposed to be doing other work and not drawing pictures. Reports indicate that the drawing was horrible.

“I get that he’s a kid and all, but there are kids drawings and there are kids drawings and this was something else. I know they said that the teacher told him that the picture would be offensive to the other students but that isn’t because of what the drawing is of, but because of how it was done. I’ve seen the picture and I can tell you that this ain’t a Picasso,” said one school insider. “I mean again it is a kid, but really we shouldn’t be encouraging this kind of thing. We want our kids to do better, to be better, and by rewarding this type of drawing, well that just doesn’t do good for anyone. It only shows the other students that they don’t really need to try in order to get attention, and that doesn’t do anyone any good.”

A facebook page supporting the student and showcasing the drawing has drawn more than 7000 supporters.

“There is a notion that when something is American it is automatically good and better but that doesn’t always play out. The American education system has been lagging kid drawing
behind other countries for a very long time now and that is going to come back to bite the country in the long run. You can’t simply support things because they are done, you have to hold everyone to standards if you are going to improve the student’s opportunities in the world,” said Scrape TV American analyst Dave Davidson. “In the big picture this little controversy isn’t a big deal and is not really indicative of a larger problem in the American education system, but someday these children will grow up and lead the economy and they need to learn that simply showing up isn’t enough, that quality does matter. The world is changing and even eleven year olds need to learn that.”

The drawing in question is currently hanging on the Girard refrigerator.
