Houston, TX – Arguably, there would not be a modern United States without assassinations. While few people would argue that the killing of an elected official is a good thing the history of such events across the world have often shifted the course 
of things, frequently in a positive direction. That is very much true in the United States which has seen more than its share of killings, killings which have altered the destiny of the nation permanently.
The most famous of those killings is probably the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. While his killing was certainly a tragedy for the nation, it did help solidify a fragile government which had just completed the Civil War and paved the way for reformers such as Ulysses S. Grant, who may never have ascended to the Presidency had Lincoln lived. Like many things in life, we have no way of knowing what might have happened had things turned in a different direction, but we do know how certain events shaped the modern world. Whether it is the killing of Lincoln, Julius Caesar, or Christ, the impact of such events have forced the flow of history down different paths. While the successful assassination of Gabrielle Giffords would not have had the same type of impact on history, the event that nearly killed her certainly impacted the nation and the course of her personal history. Now Giffords has finally stepped into the limelight once again, looking remarkably normal for someone who has shot in the head.
“We have released these photos to help satisfy intense interest in the congresswoman's appearance. What we wanted to avoid was a paparazzi-like frenzy in respect to her eventual release from the hospital. We wanted people to know that she is well and doing better everyday,” said a spokesperson for the congresswoman. “She is doing extremely well and we anticipate that very shortly she will be released from the rehab facility and hopefully be able to integrate into a more normal life again.”
Giffords did undergo one further surgery after the photos were taken, to replace a piece of her skull which had been removed.
“She looks very good considering everything that happened to her, and in such a short amount of time, but these photos don’t tell the whole story. Obviously because they are pictures they don’t tell us what her mental state is, where her speech or cognitive abilities stand. She appears to have progressed well, but we all know the story pictures can tell and that’s not always accurate,” said Scrape TV Medical analyst Dr. Phillip Waites. “Look at someone like Katy Perry. She looks great in pictures, very vital and live, but when you hear her speak you realize that there isn’t much going on upstairs at all. I would argue that Giffords probably has better brain function than Perry, but that is the power of images. Hopefully though, this is a sign that she is improving.”
Doctors expect to release Giffords later this month or early in July. She will continue treatment with outpatient therapy.
“Traumatic brain injuries can take a long time to heal. Some of them never fully heal, and that is something the Giffords family is going to have to come to terms with. She may never be the person she was before, not just in personality but also in her ability to function. That is just the way these things go,” continued Waites. “I would think it very unlikely that she will be able to return to work anytime soon, if ever. Sure, she probably doesn’t need much in the way of brains to work in Congress, but her stamina will be greatly reduced. She won’t be able to deal with all those late night votes or marathon speeches. I would say that her chances of continuing in that role are limited at best. Though she could always run for Governor of Arizona. That should suit her better.”
Current Governor Jan Brewer has reported having hit her head a few dozen times since the Giffords shooting.
