GUINNESS CONFIRMS TEXAS BARBECUE PIT AS THE BIGGEST IN HISTORY
September 8 2011
Austin, TX – It took a lot of doing but Texas has finally gained place in the record books after the massive fire that has swept across the states was confirmed by officials for the Guinness Book of World Records. The massive fire, which has destroyed thousands of homes and hundreds of acres of land, met the final requirements set down by officials early on Thursday.
“This has been an incredible run and we are glad to be here to record it. The people of Texas always do things big but we never imagined exactly how big it could get. They have proven us wrong once again. Texas officially has the record for the largest outdoor barbecue pit in history,” said a spokesperson for Guinness. “There were a number of requirements that the state needed to make in order to make the record official and they did exactly that. This is a record which I don’t think will be broken for a long time to come.”
The massive barbecue was aided by dry conditions and plenty of fuel from the 1600 homes thrown into the mix.
“This is Texas, and one thing folks know about Texas is that we like our barbecues and we like things big. This time we were able to do both things at once. This is the Texas way,” said one state official. “Know we are part of history and this ain’t something people are going to top anytime soon, and if they do, well shucks we’ll just start again. We got plenty of space and plenty of willing people. And plenty of burgers you know.”
The fire is still growing and final size will be the one recorded by Guinness officials.
“This is a record that always should have belonged to Texas and now it will for a long time to come. Never mind those people in California or those Ruskies. This is the biggest cookout in history and people are going to remember that,” continued the official. “We knew we were going to have it this time. There was nothing that was going to stop it this time. Everything is bigger in Texas, we proved that here.”
A Russian effort last year was thwarted by a technicality, specifically the use of Vodka in cooking which aided the spread of the fire. Guinness officials declared the barbecue there ineligible.
“This is certainly big and only seems to be getting bigger. It’s going to be tough for anyone to beat them this time. Texas has tried before and even held the record for a little while, but this time they really got things together. They really pulled all the elements together and made it work this time around. It’s a well earned victory,” said Scrape TV American analyst Dave Davidson. “I imagine there will be a lot of people celebrating with steaks and beers. That is Texas and that would be just perfect.”
Barbecue experts from around the state have been confining certain areas of the pit with water, to give it the rounded shape required by Guinness.
“I don’t see how anyone will ever top this one, it’s massive and so well done. I’m sure other people will try in the future, because that’s what people do, but it’s going to be a long time before they beat this record,” continued Davidson. “Enjoy it Texas, you earned it. Here’s to the best dang barbecue in the lone star state ever.”
Officials haven’t decided when the barbecue will be extinguished. Governor Rick Perry flew home after last night’s Republican debate to get fresh Texas ribs.
