HUNTERS TURN OUT IN DROVES FOR KILLER GREAT WHITE BEAR IN YELLOWSTONE
August 31 2011
Cheyenne, WY – It almost seems like a joke, like something out of the movies, but it isn’t. Two hikers have been killed in Yellowstone National Park this summer, both the victims of grizzly bear attacks. Any bear attack is rare, but two in one season is virtually unheard of, creating a real life movie tale in the heart of Yellowstone.
The first killing occurred in July, and now a second after a 59-year old man was found mauled to death last week. That second killing has put authorities on alert and put out a challenge to all would be hunters to capture and kill the bear responsible for the killings, prompting a massive influx of rifle-toting wannabes seeking the reward promised by a local and hoped for the local towns so reliant on tourist dollars.
“We want to remind people that killing bears in the park is illegal. We are currently tracking down this animal or animals and we will deal with the situation. Anyone going out into the field by themselves are simply risking their lives,” said a park spokesperson. “We have experts on scene and we are conducting a thorough investigation. Please, stay away.”
Local businesses have put up a cash reward for the bear. Town officials have been reluctant to close the park even in the wake of the latest killing, despite the urging of local law enforcement.
“I don’t think the people who manage the park really understand the situation. There are a lot of good folks relying on the park remaining open and the best way to get us there is to take care of these bears. I mean you yell wild dog and everybody says ‘Huh? What?’ but you yell bear and you’ve got a panic on your hands,” said one local business owner. “We had to put up this reward. The park must stay open and we have to catch that bear before it’s too late.”
Park officials did catch a bear in the park, but its bite radius was not in keeping with the marks on either body.
“We have never had these kinds of things happening in our area and we are not going to tolerate them now. We need these animals to be taken care of and that’s what we will do,” continued the owner. “We will pay these experts whatever they need to take care of this animal and get our businesses back on a paying basis.”
Dozens of hunters have shown up to the site, most of them inexperienced and using things like dynamite.
“All these fools, they are going to get themselves killed, eaten up by this bear. We aren’t talking about snagging some brown bear or a panda, we are talking about a Grizzly. These folks don’t know what they are getting into,” said one local, grizzled hunter. “I can take care of this beast but it ain’t gonna be cheap. They can just let me know when they are ready to pay.”
At least two hunting vehicles have already overturned and one family lost most of their meat freezer attempting to catch the bear.
