LOS ANGELES OFFICIALS LOOKING INTO MASSIVE PET SHELTER JAILBREAK

June 7 2011

Los Angeles, CA – It has been speculated by many evolutionary scientists that animals were one of the major tipping points in the development of modern man. The theory goes that as we started to domesticate animals, for food, work, working horses transportation, protection, and comfort, we started to evolve more and more complex social structures, and thereby became more intelligent. The depth of the role animals played in our development is something we may never fully uncover, but one thing is true, that animals still play a major part in our lives.

On a daily basis we certainly don’t deal with great numbers of animals, but every time we eat a hamburger or a piece of toast, we are gaining the benefits of our long relationship with the rest of the animal kingdom. Whether our interaction with animals was the catalyst for our evolution or merely one of many steps in a complex process almost doesn’t matter anymore, animals and humans are intertwined and in many ways could not live without each other. That is no more evident than it is with our pets. Whether we have dogs, cats, snakes, or any other kind of domestic animals, they rely on us for almost everything, and in return give us undying and unequivocal affection. Of course, not all animals are loved, there simply aren’t enough homes for all of them, and many end up in shelters like the one which has endured a number of breakouts in the last few months.

“We have been experiencing an abnormal number of disappearances over the last year and we felt it was finally time to appeal to the public. While many of these dog in shelter
disappearances have occurred at one shelter, the Lincoln Heights facility, we have seen losses in other areas, suggesting that this is an organized and disciplined effort,” said a spokesperson for the Animal Service Department. “In all, 64 animals, mostly cats and dogs, have gone missing over the last year. This far exceeds our average and we are asking for anyone in the public who knows anything about this situation to please come forward.”

49 of the missing animals were from the Lincoln Heights shelter, which is considered one of the rougher shelters in the Los Angeles area.

“I don’t know much more than anyone else, but I can tell you that everyone here is on edge. There are all kinds of new security procedures in place, all these new restrictions, and it’s almost got the staff feeling like we are the criminals,” said a shelter worker who preferred to remain anonymous. “We know it’s rough on the bosses, but we have to work here. I have no problem going through some extra checks but they can’t treat us all like we are a part of these escapes. There’s probably someone working from the inside, but that doesn’t mean we are all criminals.”

The Lincoln Heights facility, which is not where our source works, has been in lockdown for the last two months following the escapes.cat in shelter

“They told us not to worry, that the animals who escaped weren’t dangerous, but I mean why do you escape unless you have nothing to lose. Usually if you have nothing to lose you aren’t the most calm of people, or animals, or whatever. I’m a little concerned, I mean I live in the neighbourhood,” continued the insider. “I work with these animals everyday but that doesn’t mean I want them in my backyard. Work is supposed to stay at work, and when you are dealing with the kind of dregs of society, that’s exactly where you want them to stay.”

Officials have said that some may not actually be missing but that clerical errors may have affected the count. The Mayor’s office has apparently directed department to conducts a thorough investigation. The FBI has not been contacted yet.
