LOS ANGELES POLICE HUNTING ELUSIVE LAP BAND KILLER

Los Angeles, CA – For many people, weight is a thing that weighs heavily on their minds. Diets, exercise, and even motivation from loved ones are often not enough for some people to lose weight, which often results in them seeking more extreme treatments.
Usually that extreme treatment involves surgery. For years the surgery of choice was cosmetic, the removal of fat via suction tubes, but increasingly the move has been towards the less invasive lap band surgery. Unfortunately, for some people, the surgery itself has become more dangerous than the weight they chose to lose.
In the last two years at least five people have died following the relatively simply operation in Los Angeles when conducted by a particular company. While it’s true that all surgeries do carry with them risks, the consistency of the deaths in L.A. have police concerned that they may have yet another serial killer on their hands, or that the company behind the procedures just isn’t very good. So far, though, investigators are focusing on the former.
“We were contacted a few days ago concerning the death of a 55-year old woman in Orange County following an operation. In the course of our investigation we determined that the proper medical procedures had been followed and we are now awaiting medical testing to determine the specific cause of death,” said a spokesperson for the LAPD. “At this stage we are not willing to say that this case is in any way related to any others that have occurred over the last few years. I repeat, we have no evidence to suggest that this is a part of a series one way or the other.”
Other lap band deaths have occurred in the city over the last few years but aside from the surgeries themselves, police have found no connection between the victims. Still, some of the families have hired private investigators and they have uncovered some disturbing things.
“No matter what the police have said I am convince that there is one person, or one group of people behind all of these killings. Perhaps two or even three individuals. They would have to have access and motivation, but the markers are there. Things look consistent with a series,” said one private investigator who preferred to remain anonymous. “I suspect that it might be someone that may have once been overweight or had to care for someone who was morbidly obese. That would provide them with the proper motivation. The police know this too, no matter what they are telling people.”
Police have reportedly conducted a deep investigation into the company behind the procedures, 1-800-GET-THIN, but turned up no connection between the patients aside from their size.
The company has referred more than ten thousand surgeries since it began.
“There’s more going on here than they are going to tell you. There is a bigger story behind this and unfortunately it looks like the police are more than willing to participate in a cover-up. This is L.A. after all, having a killer hunting people seeking cosmetic surgeries would certainly create a lot of fear,” continued the investigator. “Hopefully they are only doing it to protect the public, not themselves. It would be very unsettling if they were somehow covering it up or even covering for one of their own.”
The investigator expects the case to get much bigger as time goes on.
